I am sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I am not sure how to find a suitable company to advise on up-plating.

The requirements are fairly modest so I would have thought it would be straightforward.

My MH is a 2009 Autosleepers Symbol ES PVC. It is plated to 3300kg and I want to increase this to 3500kg.

Do I need a specialist company to do this or can any decent service centre do it?

Does anyone have any recommendations of companies in the Midlands area?

Peter

You need someone who is recognised by the dvla.
Svtech isone company, there s another but cant remember who, anyone?

I did the same, 3300kgs to 3500kgs on our PVC..…it’s a paperwork exercise. I went with SV Tech as I didn’t know about the other company.

Easy process. (y)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have been in touch with SVTech who have given me a quote.

I am just mulling over whether to add air-assist suspension before I go ahead with the up-plating. It would seem to make sense

just waiting now for the paperwork to be returned by DVLA

Do yourself a favour and get a quote from Van Weight Engineering as well.

Here are reviews from other Funsters.

I've just added some to my van, so am in the same position. I can recommend Van weight, but used SV the last time I did this process. Nothing wrong with either company, they both get you to where you want to be, just one is more moderately priced than the other.
I sourced a kit of EBlay. There are plenty of videos on line to crib for information. My top tip is, measure your pipe runs very carefully, then make the cut for each airbag. Fit the angled inlet valve to the airbag, and fit the supply pipe. Now fit one of the schrader valves to the open end of the pipe.
You can now compress the air bag as you open the schrader valve. When fully compressed allow the schrader valve to close. The airbag will now stay compressed, and it's so much easier to fit under the "U" bolts on the leaf springs. You can now line the top fixing up with the airbag to plate and by pressing the schrader valve let it un-compress a tiny amount at a time to allow you to line up the top bolts and start to screw them home. It took a while for me to figure that one out, but once done that way it was a doddle. Good luck. Oh incidentally, the airbags made a big difference in the ride height and comfort.
Mike.

You need to contact S V Tech they are experts in this field and are DVLA recognized it's a much simpler process if you go thru them.

I up-plated mine via SV last year and did it all via email and phone calls.

I went from 4500kg to 5500kg and it was a simple process and only £80 if I recall.

Cost me about four times that, with SV, to go from 3300kgs to 3500kgs. 🤷‍♂️

Try SV Tech.
It'll be a paper exercise.
If you have the C1 category on your licence or higher, why not go to 3850Kg ?
Again its only a paper exercise, and as you will be classed as a private heavy goods vehicle (PHGV), which will bring down the cost of your road tax.;)

We used Van Weight Engineering... an extremely efficient service from Dee. (the company owner).
From me completing and emailing the simple form covering information about our van to Dee, and Dee returning all the paperwork I needed to send to DVLA. It was sorted out in a couple of days. I have received the new metal weight plate for the van...just need DVLA to return my new V5c.

Total cost £160 - a bargain!

Does anyone know if up-plating above 3500 has any effect on clean air zone charges? As far as I can see the only penalty of up-plating at the moment might be additional breakdown/recovery cover costs and medicals when we reach 70, however we should save on road tax costs. We have a Euro 6 engine and not subject to charges but the only way I've found at the moment of establishing what the charges might be is entering our registration number onto the relevant websites. That of course doesn't tell mw what happens if the weight on the V5 changes. I'll be weighing the van later this week as I know that we must be very close to 3500kg when loaded.

If you are changing from 3300 to 3500 as per the original post, I would very much doubt you need to add air-assist.
if you want to go upto a weight where that is needed, you would be in the PHGV area and will need a suitable category on your license (C1 or C). If you have that, no worries, it not, it all gets more involved.

when you say "only a paper exercise" what exactly do you mean? send the paperwork in and no actual changes made to the vehicle?

just curious ;)

Medicals when you reach 50 then every 5 years to 60 then every year.

There is only paperwork to fill out and sign.
There is nothing to do mechanically to the axles or suspension.

Really? I already have C1 on my license (grandfather's rights) and believed that I would only need a medical when I reach 70, and thereafter?

I stand corrected!

Drivers who passed their car test up until the end of 1996 normally have the C1 category as acquired rights and must have a medical every 3 years with the first at 70.
From January 1997 drivers must have a medical when applying for a provisional licence for the C1 category and must renew their medical every 5 years from 45 up to 65, then annually from 65.

Not for a C1 licence. Medical at 70 and then every 3 years after that.
Yes - thanks I have now managed to find that. I'm still not certain on CAZs but becoming more confident that this isn't an issue.
