Three guesses as to how happy I am at just finding some unusual damage on one of my van tyres, with 1900 miles on it and looking at buying a new tyre ?

Another three guesses as to the cause, because the damage is quite unusual, I can't make my mind up and have given myself three options and please feel free to speculate yourselves.

a) Picked something up while driving, which has caused the damage and corresponding marks, then thrown itself clear,

b) Deliberate act of criminal damage,

c) One of the several builders I've had at the house over the past few weeks, using the tyre as a work platform while drilling.

The van hasn't moved since June 8th and there are no little bits of rubber lying on the drive, to reinforce 'C' but we've had a period of very heavy and prolonged rain during that period, which would have washed it away.

Looks dangerously like your builders to me as well, I would have gone for malicious damage without that option

Hard to believe they didn't know, that always upsets me, not the cost, just not being told :(

Definitely NOT a hole saw. The outer radius is far too offset no matter what angle the saw was at.
My guess is a piece of cut metal sheeting as if trimmed with tin-shears which would also cause it to curve into an arc.

Pointy end in tyre (cutting the countersunk effect as it moved) and blunt end rubbing sidewall as the wheel turned.
Don't blame the builder, blame the travelling scrap merchant.

Have you perhaps run over a suspension spring?

I just printed the first image and got an ellipse equating to an offset of roughly 10 degrees to line up perfectly. Not conclusive, and my geometry skills aren't what they used to be.

My guess - your tyre ran over a wheel trim and the sharp ends of the steel spring inside the trim caused the damage.

Curb damage, or caught something in the road would be my guess. Look like it swirled round then dug in? Perhaps something sharp leaning against a curb which when you drove past it squashed it between the curb and the tyre...

I am 99% sure that that has caught something on the road ,what, who knows .But if the tyre has only done 1900mls it could be repaired .We call it a major repair at a cost of about £30.00 + vat.
all ours are done by a company called Stone Tyre Repairs and they specialise in sidewall repairs. But if you have a local tyre company im sure they will deal with a similar company in your area.

You have my sympathy it's an annoying mystery. There is only one answer and it's not what your looking for. You will never find out what caused this and you will never prove any theory either. Bottom line is you need a new tyre, in the end its case of pay up and move on

Hi.
Have it repaired and put it on the spare? Save confrontation and having to prove who did what, and it could have been picked up while out on the road.

No repair are permitted to the side wall of tyres as per British Standard BSAU159, I'm afraid your tire is a right off and it would not pass an MOT and as such would give your insurance company an opt out in the event of an accident even if it did not involve the tyre defect.

I hadn't considered that it would repair, but will have a look at that option. Far cheaper than a new tyre. Thanks (y)

I hit a rock a few years back and just caught it on the side wall. It took a chunk out of the top and scratched the side but I guess you'd know if you'd done that ?

If you look at the heading of what you have posted it is referring to minor repairs i.e. plug repairs which not allowed in the sidewall. The company that im talking about is called STR and the company owner John Worman has been in business for 40yrs and is a very good friend of mine .The repairs that are carried out are done under BSAU159 and then that is followed by a letter which i think is either F or G.But we get many tyres major repaired in a year and never have problems with them.
