Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Me thinks that fuel consumption might be a problem with a Unimog, but I do have the greatest respect for these vehicles.
There are a lot of them out there, but I wonder how many "ordinary" folks wouldn't have a clue what one looked like let alone what they're called?

Eight Years and 28,000 Miles.
Not a Unimog, but I saw this on a French campsite this September. It looked a bit out of place amongst the caravans and mohos etc..

But I guess they have to stop somewhere..

They come into their own in what used to be called third world inc Australia (as long as it doesn't rain too much) , anywhere else they are a sledgehammer to crack a walnut , unfortunately the owners are not as "specialised" as the vehicles , the first unimog is a roll over waiting to happen . I can tell you they are quite roly poly to drive , being long travel coil sprung . They being wheeled vehicles can get stuck just like any other , but are harder to get out as they have usually got a lot further in ! Motorhomes are chaep in comparison (y)

6 to the gallons is enough to put most people off

I think you'll do a lot better than that on tarmac, in 2WD especially if you have the higher ratio axles.

I don't know there is a lot of weight low down, so the C of G would be quite low.

I think this is probably further than most of us would want to go

There's a world of difference between a staged pic and actual experience , take it from me , had the T shirt for a long time :)

True, but this picture was taken at Unicat's manufacturing facility, and with the calibre of their clients, I would think it highly unlikely that they would try to show something that was untrue.

No body said it was untrue , but there are dynamics that make a considerable difference compared with slowly jacking a vehicle up
:) also that first post pic would most likely be in excess of 4m tall !!

I can tell you they are quite roly poly to drive , being long travel coil sprung .

My son found that out the hard way a couple of months back. He'd been working in the woods and must have punctured the tyre on the way out. This was the end result when he came to the first left hand corner. No other vehicles involved and him and a farmer righted it and got it off the road before the police arrived, but he's at court this Friday, charged with 'driving without due care and attention'.
You can see the front right tyre has deflated and a local tyre company has examined the tyre and have written a report indicating that there is damage to the inner sidewall which would have lead to the flat.
We're hoping that the court will be fair with him. He's just completed his first year running his own tree surgery business and the loss of his 'mog is a big hit financially and emotionally as he loved the old girl, he's trying to source a replacement cab for her. The good news is, that as it's LHD, he got out with cuts and bruises and just 5 stitches.
