I wish to tour Spain in my camper van. I have booked a return ferry, but I have just realized that my licence needs to be renewed because I will be 70 whilst Iam in Spain. Needless to say I will send of my old paper licence before I leave the UK. So I will not be able to produce my licence if required. Would I be legally intituled to drive in Spain. Thank You in Advance.

No. You need to carry a photo type plastic card driving license at all times for identification and driving classes etc.

If you need to retain the C1 you got a problem. as has been said above you need a current photo licence in your hand.

DVLA will unlikely get it back to you within 2 or 3 months.

if you dont need a medical or the C1 it can be done online and you likely get it back within 14 days.

Anecdotal evidence from MHF would suggest that you have no chance of the DVLA returning your Licence
to you within a reasonable timeframe should you wish to retain C1. Lets get the crystal ball out and suggest 3-4 months, (and others on here have
waited longer)

Lets assume that you haven't had the Carthago weight uprated to above 3500kgs.

If that is the case you can apply for your post 70yrs licence online and again, the responses on here
would suggest that the DVLA will deal with it reasonably quickly. (How quickly?, others can comment)

Should you wish to retain your C1 Licence, notwithstanding you do not need it if the van is ,3500Kgs
you can always apply for the C1 Licence once you get back. Your Birthday doesn't prevent you
from applying for it long after the candles have been blown out.

Caution. Do not go to Spain without a valid licence. Whilst it might? be the case that you can
go there and back without an encounter with the Authorities, they can, and will make it both
financially ruinous for you and difficult if not impossible for you to continue your holiday.

Edit, I appreciate that while I was typing, the OP doesn't need or want the C1 entitlement.
