Hi All,
I currently have a C1 rating on my licence but I'm rapidly approaching the age where I needed to renew it to keep driving my MH. I know I needed to take the test, medical and train etc but do I need to apply for the provisional licence none C1 rated drivers need?
I can't find any information on an age forced renewal- anybody got a link? I'm assuming (probably wrongly) that my current licence rating covers that base but can anyone tell me the timeline of when I need to apply to the DLVC and with what in the run up to my 70th?
Thanks

when I was 70 ordered D4 form off internet doctors for a medical passed now it’s due again hope I pass.DVLA sent a form out but i had to go on there site and order a form, think I’ve ordered the right one ,hope this helps.

there are several links on this forum about keeping your C1 once you reach 70 so it will be worth doing a search. Search D4, or C1 and there will be tons of relevant info for you.

The Gov web site sets it out quite clearly as well.

As a start just to overcome any anxiety:
Providing you have no significant medical condition you do not have to have a provisional driving licence or take an actual driving test. You need a medical to show you are fit to drive and to confirm there are not symptoms that maybe an issue related to your driving. That medical also is to include an eye test but this is also a very simple process.

Again unless you have a medical history that may impact on your driving - very high blood pressure, history of heart issues etc it maybe simpler to arrange a medical through one of the private companies to do the test rather than try an arrange one through your gp and then another through an opticians. It will be much quicker and less expensive privatly.

We went through these people - took 15 min and then you just send the licence form D4 ( I think), which you should get from the post office (not sure if you can download this one or not) and fill it in before you have your appointment and take it with you to the appointment.

There is a minimum timeframe before your 70th that you can take your medical, (60 Days?) but the 2 years (or 3?) years licence starts from when you pass the medical so don't make it too early.
As DVLA takes ages I believe as long as you have passed the medical and you have posted it you can still drive under C1 after 70 even though you haven't had the licence back - but check this out yourself.

All very simple, good luck.

I thought it was 3 months beforehand?

And I think you can only continue driving in the UK, which is currently affecting our plans for next year.

Happy to be corrected if I’ve got either of these points wrong.

Your question has two answers in my view, firstly at 70 a self declaration renewal on medical fitness for your car licence, if only renewing your B or B+E that is three yearly. Secondly C1 from 70 is an annual renewal on a GP examination and or Opticians report if appropriate.
The medical form is a D4. Renewal application on a D46.
This is normally sent out 90 days before your renewal date.

Almost forgot a B or B+E at 70 can be renewed online at the DVLA site. But not the C1 entitlement

I think a drivers medical is all you need much cheaper than gp,

C1 is 3 years after 70. A full D4 on each occasion, which includes eye test, appropriate approved doctors can eye test at the same time. A C (HGV) requires annual D4 after 70.

This explains it quite well....https://d4drivers.uk/driver-medicals/motorhome-medical/

The renewal is normally every 3 years. You need DVLA D2 and D4 forms. You can order these online but the D2 is not downloadable. The larger Post Offices may also have them. You can make the application 3 months before your 70th birthday. It is best to make the application in the first few weeks of the 3 month period because if there is more than 56 days left on your old license you do not need a new photo which makes the process easier for you and the DVLA. The forms come with good guidance notes on filling them in. Opinions differ on whether to use your GP or one of the cheaper firms for the medical report, if you have complex health problems I would suggest your GP because he/she has full access to your medical history.

As you already have C1 on your existing licence then do not, under any circumstances post your old licence off to DVLA when applying for your new one. New ones have been known to come back missing groups and without your old licence you have no proof.
you only need a medical and the correct form and that should be it. Ignore the doom and gloom merchants, mine took 9 days from posting off to new licence arriving and that included dropping my C but keeping C1.

I am currently going through the process and you are instructed to send your old licence with the application.

Yes that’s correct you are, on my form there was a box to tick stating licence lost etc. I just ticked that. Like I said without your old licence you have no proof of previous groups. Motorbike, HGV etc. I personally know of two police motorcyclists that lost their bike group and had to take their test again and one truck driver that lost his HGV group and again had to take his test again.
Obviously it’s up to you, I wouldn’t risk it.

But does not have to be from your own doctors practice or an Opticians cheaper and quicker with a specialist agency. And is not an annual renewal - every 3 years.

Take a photograph of your old licence, both sides,

Too late it’s gone but l did take images on my phone which l have done previously.
Didn’t see the option for lost licence either.

You can take a screen shot of your current entitlement from the DVLA website at anytime before they process your application.

Yes,lve got that as well as l am checking every couple of days hopeful one day it will at last show a date that proves it’s been renewed and l would know it’s on its way.

Remember the D4 is only a medical report the doctor does not pass or fail you, the DVLA does that. If you have a complex medical history they may contact your GP anyway, which takes time. I went to one of the cheaper D4 companies and they made a complete mess of the form, I got a full refund. I then went to my GP, paid about double the price but got a neat and comprehensive report which was processed by the DVLA in a few weeks.

It very much depends on whether you have any serious medical issues. If the checklist indicates that you have not then the
'medical' comprises a blood pressure check and an eye test. D4Drivers (and no doubt others) were quick and cheap. More to the point they can have appointments available that your GP possibly has not.

Agree but presumably you had to also get a report from an Opticians as well. Quite difficult to get a doctors appointment for non urgent medical reasons right now - this would not be one of them.

Some GPs will do the sight test too. Last December I got a D4 appointment with my GP within a week, depends on the doctor.

If you have a medical problem you may well have a long wait for a GP appointment but a DVLA medical check means £100+ in the practice coffers.

Am I just a tiny bit cynical?

Richard.

I doubt that money is the driver. I've had two D4 medicals. For my first I contacted my GP practice who couldn't give me a date (Sorry we're not doing them at the moment) and wanted £120 if they were to do it. So I booked online with D4D & got the appointment within the week and paid £50. I did the same this year with same timescale and £55. The eye test is just a wall chart job included in the D4D check-up.

I renewed mine online and lost the C1 when I rang the dvla they said had you have posted it you would have kept your C1

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all your help.
Overwhelmed by the support from you all and the mist has cleared now.
Thanks again,
Graham
