We're looking at options to buy, secondhand. Considering models with the u shaped rear lounge as we want lots of living room. However we want 4 belted travel seats. Does this rule out the rear lounge layout? I can't see from any of the pictures I've seen that you can have belted travel seats in the rear lounge.

Can anyone put me straight?

I have the Autotrail apache 700.. Has a front dinette with 2 belted seats plus the rear lounge, there are also versions that have 4 belted seats in the dinette, so 6 in total but not as common. Layout suits us and gives plenty of space. The Autotrail scout is same layout.
If you go for the models with no dinette and just the rear lounge then yes you will be limited on belts.
As for carrying passengers with no belts that a whole topic on its own...

tonka, that looks interesting. How long is it? I'm thinking over 7 metres?

7.5mtr... Mine is a 2012 model. 6 berth, has a good payload of 730kg.
Big rear locker space, under seats etc so lots of storage.
The AT's come with a wind out awning already fitted within the side of the vehicle and spare wheel on back. Items that are not standard on some vans and will cost extra plus reduce payload.

Yeah, looks nice. Way too big for us though. Thanks for your ideas. Looks like we'll not be buying a rear lounge layout, since the centre dinette makes it too long for us.

A shorter van with a fixed bed will give a lot less living area. Have a good look around before you commit..
My view is always to imagine it lashing down with rain and you have to stay inside for a day, those front swivel seats look nice but i dont think i would want to be sat in one all day.. Love my rear lounge as we can seat several people or lounge / lie back during the day with a book / tv..

Good hunting..

Yeah, I think it's good to have plenty of living space, even though we don't plan to see much rain. We'll be mostly following the sun in Europe. We already live most of the year in Greece, and having just offloaded a house, :D2, are looking to see other parts of Europe before we're too old and decrepit....

We've realised whatever we buy will be a compromise. Won't necessarily be a fixed bed, for the reason you mention. Maybe A class with drop down bed and a make-up single. So many choices!

There are a couple of rear lounge MHs with travel seats which 'lift up' from within the side sofa bases but they take up a lot of storage space and to be honest I wouldn't want to be sitting in one in a rear end shunt!

Cheers, Minxy Girl. Yeah, that sounds a bit flakey.... But thanks for mentioning it.
