it really wont be a problem as your van is British registered.

just as French trailers have their own documents, the law applies to the natives.

Google translation of French highway code exert

legal obligations

Since 1995, the Highway Code imposes the following rules:

It is forbidden to ride on motor vehicles and their trailers:

* Tires of different structures, excluding the possible spare tire temporary use;
* Different types of tires on an axle, either single wheel or dual wheel;
* Of tires identified by an index of carrying capacity or speed category symbol below the maximum capacities provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

When the Highway Code forbids mixing tires of different structures on the same axle it means that the tires must be both:

* Same brand
* Same size
* The same category of use (eg road, snow, road)
* Same structure: radial or diagonal
* Same speed code
* Same index of carrying capacity

The Highway Code also specifies that:

* "The wear indicator of 1.6 mm is the minimum legal height of rubber."
* "The difference between the depth of the main grooves of two tires mounted on an axle should not exceed 5 mm.

I have one "odd make" tyre on my (French) car. Only realised this when it was put as an advisory on the C.T. (MOT)
If you saw the state of some of the cars here, my odd, but otherwise legal, tyre is probably the least risky. On a daily basis there are cars with no tread at all, no exhausts etc.. Drove behind one that had such a crazed cracked windscreen I doubt the driver could see out. It veered right onto a track and one side of the car lifted off the ground. Ah, rural life in France.........

Altho I live in France and have not had to change (buy) a new tyre I have been told that if I have to replace a tyre, then I must replace both on that axle at the same time.

certainly seems like a good reason not to go and live abroad.
here all goods vehicles over 3,500kg only require 1mm of tread.
