Any form of tyre damage to me, regardless of age, is an encouragement to get them changed - they're the only form of contact you have with the road.

But first I would go ask the opinion of a trusted tyre specialist - as they passed an MoT a short time ago and no warnings were issued it's worth a second opinion. Just beware of the shysters who will say " ooh yes Guv, totally knackered, but I can do you a good deal on.......etc. etc."

Incidentally I've run on winter Contis ever since the first tyre change (had to upgrade due to weight increase) and have never suffered any problems - well I did have a puncture once due to an errant screw. All my tyres have been replaced through being worn out; we tend to "use" our van!

I'm a Total Newbie!
I'd be asking for a refund on them from the manufacturer if they were my tyres.

I used to buy what my mechanic described as "mid range" tyres for the car until one day I was really skint but desperately needed new tyres for the front of the car. I got the cheapest the garage sold. After all they all have to meet the same regulations regardless. I thought I might just have to replace them sooner but they lasted just as long as the more expensive ones, so far as I could tell. I didn't actually clock the miles but it seems that way. Whenever I get them changed now I ask for the cheapest.

Worst case I have to replace them a sooner than the expensive ones. But at 1/3 of the price does that matter?

Not if the structural cords are not showing. I know this because Iā€™ve had this as an advisory in the past.
Depends on width of cracks as well
They can still fail with cracking without cord showing
Doesn't matter would change mine if I discovered cracks anyway

This sad story just confirms my impressions on so called "quality tyres".

I buy relatively cheap new tyres & replace them every couple of years, I can afford 4 sets to the price of 1 set of these overpriced pieces of rubbish.
So its easy to replace my tyres every two years with ease, win win & I've never experienced any problems in 40yrs of driving commercial type vehicles.
I was a tyre fitter in a previous life, so I do know my way around a set of boots.
What brand do you use ambulancekidd?

I am dying to know what Conti Tech/Warranty department are going to say for tyres dated 2017 on a MH, being looked after as best they can be? Fingers crossed they will replace all 4 FOC, but then again, I have always been a dreamer, or so the OH always reminds me.
Sad situation to be in for the OP, good job he noticed, especially as it sailed through an MOT with no advisories.
Strange also that what is a great tyre experience for one of us, is a disaster for another, it must come down to the vans suspension/weight and use at the end of the day, hard to get right for most in these times.
best of luck.

I use whatever I can buy which is at the top end of the budget tyre choice.
When you get a quote, Google the brand, a great many of them are made by the large tyre manufacturers anyway & as a bonus the ride is massively better than these tyres with rock hard sidewalls, the grip levels are far better too.

Thanks for this thats really useful, Iā€™ll check my tyres tomorrow, the van is a 2016 plate with only 17000 on the clock, but probably original van tyres ( pvc conversion) , if I have to change them Iā€™ll take your advice

Apparently its the cold that does more damage to tyres and that they sit grass also ruins them.Im not suggesting its the case here.

it is strange; for the past 14 years I have used nothing but conti vanco camper tyres. this is the 4th set across 2 motorhomes.
always parked up in the same place when not used and similar treatment to all the others.

I have never had any issues with this tyre make / model previously, I have never noticed any form of cracking on previous sets, the longest of which was on the van for 6 years.

Just curious has it sat stationary this last covid year

like most of us it has been more idle than a normal year
but it was last used August / September time for about a 1000 mile trip, and earlier in the year for a couple of trips.

thing is i would guess, that many others would be having a similar issue of it was simply down to the lockdowns.

I had another look today with the wheels back on the van and unless you get on your back in close view of the tyre tread its very difficult to see the cracks. if i had not taken the wheels off to change the disc pads i may never have noticed ( possibly until it was too late )
I am now beginning to wonder how long the cracks have been there.

Well, I also took the front wheels off today to check pads etc and noticed longitudinal cracks at the base of the tread on the Continental Camper tyres. Date code is 1018 with 5 or 6mm tread.
Will await your response from Continental with interest. Unfortunately van is Sorned at the moment but could always take the wheel back off to get my tyre mans opinion.
Tomorrow, weather permitting it'll be the turn of the rear brakes,, and tyres

Tyres can crack relatively quickly
Had a caravan in the past that used to get moved twice a year
Tyres were ok when checked before spring move
By the autumn I chose to replace before bring the van home
Last van the inside sidewalls started to go on the inside rather than the outside exposed to the sun ect
Tyres are just part of budget that goes with having a motorhome

many many years! since I was a kid
Now here is a bit of a shocker. I put 4 new tyres on the back of our motorhome yesterday. The old ones were 10 years old, but the tyre fitter commented on the fact there was no damage or cracking at all. He said, why not sell them, as somebody will put them on a work van and get another year or 2 from them.

Not expecting much, I cheekily put them on facebook at Ā£120 expecting somebody to knock the price right down. The first chap that got in touch drove 2 hours and collected them today at the asking price. He is delighted with them after checking them all inside and out

Quick update for all.

I have had a very positive response from continental tyres.
They have said its ageing of the tyres and that it is aesthetic so not an immediate issue.
However, they have offered to replace the tyres with allowance off for wear and tear, based on the amount of tread left.

They have given me a couple of options and
I have a few hoops to jump through to sort the replacement of the tyres.

So far I can say I am impressed with the speed of response and I think the offer I have is very fair.

When I have sorted all the details I will report back again.

If you don't change them you will always a a little niggle in the back of your mind whilst driving. It's worth contacting the manufacturer as they may have had similar issues with others from the same batch.

I'm a newbie
Just back from MOT inspection on my Peugeot Boxer 2015 reg, now on 7k miles it only had 1700 miles on it when we bought it 14 months back, Advisory on all four tyres with shallow longitudinal surfacing cracking, It had stood outside in the elements all its life But no sidewall cracking at all, Tester stated in this condition he would pass it again next year only a fail once next layer is just visible at any point in circumferenc.
His comments multi layer carcasses under the tread is what takes the loading, the rubber is there for grip and still plenty of that left.
I expect I will see how they go and change pre next MOT anyway, fingers crossed if not before.

Excellent news, especially as one who spent out on 5 new Contis last year (so Iā€™d be ready for the off to Greece when lockdown finished - ha ha!!).

Thanks for the update and look forward to hearing more in due course šŸ˜„

Cracking of the sidewalls is a MOT fail
But like rust on brake pipes there is a description of whats acceptable
Personally I would be looking them to change them before any long drives

Rust on brake pipes is an advisory (Just changed all mine
Cracked sidewalls is a fail - yet cracks in the tread are not even an advisory

If they are supposed to have cracks in the tread they would make them that way. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Itā€™s a cracker šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Would you buy them new like that?

Mr quick fit Would you like these sir just have cracks in the tread you can have a 20 percent discount?

If you would then run on them. Been nice to know you and your family.

No way would I use them to save Ā£300

Conti tyres refunded the value of the 4 tyres less a small amount for the 3 years / wear and tear.
I am very happy with their excellent customer service and the very professional way that they dealt with my case.
I now have all new tyres with the support of conti tyres.
