Had tyre sealant installed today at LNB towbars Bristol.

The van drove ok there and seemed ok till we got on the motorway, just turned on to the M4 and picked up speed to around 60mph. Steering wheel is vibrating and when you hit a pothole you can feel it shake from side to side.

Looks very much as if the sealant has thrown the tyre balance haywire.

Anyone know, experienced, had, etc also any ideas why, could it be too much gunk?

May have to travel back there tomorrow and (i don't know) Rang them on the way home and they said pop back and we will look at it, but what's to see?

Any thoughts/knowledge very much appreciated.

Many years ago I was warned off about using the stuff by a good friend who was a tyre fitter..

He said should you need a usual repair some tyre fitters wont touch them...

Don`t know if that is the norm today...

Am aware that may be an issue but this new van doesn't have a spare. was in two minds to gunk or spare, went for gunk as once ripped a big chunk out of the wheel arch insert on a caravan due to running on a flat. Only noticed it as we slowed for a roundabout and could see the smoke. Car & Van tracked just fine till I stopped to look.

But think pointless going to to try balancing the wheels and unsure what the effects of too much gunk would be. In theory it spreads around the inside of the tyre but think if too much when potholing then the layer gets disrupted, shaking starts and after a skake or 10 it settles down to a slight vibration.

Halfrauds and Quick Fit will or any filthy (scruffy) back street tyre place might.
I just dont want the mess or disposal problems.

Tyre balancers don't rotate at 70mph..
With liquid inside it could be spot on but at 70mph could be out of balance.
Shouldn't make any difference if there's a cupful or a gallon in it

I put it in my ride-on mower tyres.... We have some thorn hedging.... and after a winter lay-up I got a puncture which wouldn't seal.
Removed the tyre and the sealer had set semi hard in the bottom of the tyre.
Had to use the jet wash to get it all out.

I had a Gold Wing on which the front tyre kept going flat, when Watling Tyres stripped it down we found that it had sealant in the tyre, It had rotten the wheel around the valve !! NEVER TOUCH THE STUFF.
It sounds like your sealant has solidified and thrown it out of balance.

I’d rather a set of TPMS then gunk....

but your wheel has thrown A weight as pappajohn said, probably while doing the gunk install...

Ok if it had thrown a weight then it did it in the LNB workshop. As you come off the m4/m5 straight in to Aztec west.

also if weight thrown would be out of balance by same effects all the time at certain speeds, potholes would have no effect.

it was fine before the gunk!

An out of balance wheel will only start to wobble at the sweet spot speed, when you go over a pot hole it disrupts the balance and speed, that’s why you say it dies down afterward....

Not sure that’s strictly true can’t say I’ve had the same issues with an out of balance wheel

Put some in my tyres but too much vibration at 65 on the front ones so took it out and fitted tyrepal sensors instead.

I always used tyre sealant prior to having a spare tyre. Never had a problem with a tyre place as long as you tell them. It can make a mess if they dont know and push the tyre off the rim without completely deflating it.
