Hi

Asking but I think I know the answer!

Van rear tyre leaking air through faulty valve, found it totally flat. Pumped up but leaking almost as fast as being pumped.

Clearly can't drive to tyre station.

I need to check if I have 'breakdown' while on the drive.

Other options please?

No replace the valve while it’s flat then if It’s the valve job done if not you have wasted 2p 😂😂😂

Put the spare on maybe.
I do have a spare but don't have the tool that is needed to remove the ultra tight bolts.

Going to have to call a mobile tech, unless I can pump up prior to driving - slowly- to the tyre place 1 mile away, for pre-arranged appointment.

Thank you all :D

Try using a pair of tweezers, or thin nose pliers. You can also make a tool by filing a slot into a flat bladed screwdriver (or just driver tip).

If you need a spare you can take one from any schrader valve, such as push bike tyre, ride on mower, wheel barrow.

Give the tyre place a ring,If they are only a mile away they may be able to come out to you and change it for you.

Spray water round the valve, if the valve is leaking it may be the core is loose or faulty and is an easy fix.
I keep this Tyre Valve Kit in my van.

Have you got an old tyre pressure gauge around as they normally have core removal tool screwed in the end.
If its going down quickly don't even drive it a few yards it will wreck the tyre.

If its been driven at all with very low pressure the tyre needs to come off and be checked. May look perfect on the outside but if inside the tyre there are any little rubber balls the tyre has overheated and is scrap.

Google tyres on the driveway, there’s loads. Then arrange a suitable time, put the kettle on and have a brew, while someone else sorts it out for you 👍🏻

DO NOT DRIVE ON IT, especially a mile, you’ll ruin the tyre and most probably the wheel as well, now that would be expensive.

Then you need to address the tools for changing the wheel issue, or the next time you need to remove a wheel, it could be cold, wet, dark and raining.

See if this thread helps.

Most tyre fitting companies have a mobile unit, (or they will know of one) give them a ring!

PS. Don't let them make the final tightening with an air gun, make them use your bar etc. and perhaps a good idea to get them to loosen of and retighten your other wheels so you can fit your spare if needed.

Here’s a few to help.

Once youve sorted the valve out and got it all hunky dory .
Look into getting tools sorted so you can use your spare as and when needed. It could save you a bucket load of cash and inconvenience as and when needed.
No point having a spare if you cant use it.

I like the idea, but are the valves suitable for high pressure tyres?

Very few people would know that :Eeek:

There always used to be at least one on my car's dust caps - You just don't see them anymore - of course I still have a couple :drinks:

Tyre dust caps will hold a surprising amount of pressure on their own. Enough perhaps for a very short drive (slowly) to the nearest tyre depot/fitters.

Superb information, offers of help for which I thank you all.

I called in at the local tyre place, they will replace valve FOC 😯

Having pumped the tyre to a conservative 40psi and propped the valve to limit leakage will be driving to tyre centre.
