As some may know I picked up my brand new motorhome and when we went to use the drop down bed it collapsed, it collapsed in such a way that if anyone had been sitting in the rear passenger seat they could have been severely injured, we were not moving but could have been. This incident spoiled the rest of our weekend up north as the bed blocked access to the cab and we had a passenger that couldn't use the seat belted seats, we took the motorhome back to Lowdhams on the Sat and I had to stay until the Monday until the workshop was open and it could be fixed, Lowdhams had it all morning and informed me they had fixed it so I drove back to London.

I sent a letter to Swift showing my disappointment and fair enough for them they have sent two engineers to my home today to check everything, there had been a safety recall on the bed due to the incident I faced, they are now fixing safety straps on ALL drop down beds across the country. The engineers stripped back the bed and found loose bolts and parts missing that were found on a shelf in the motorhome! Even after the repair at Lowdhams this bed was not safe, they are fitting new safety straps in now and I will update when its done, this is clearly more sloppy workmanship fro Swift and I must say on this occasion I am not hay with Lowdhams, if I had not contacted Swift I would have believed my bed was fixed and safe when in fact it was not.

Are there 2 issues here

1. the recall was not properly addressed

2. the repairs were shoddy

neither Swift fault and they seem to have really gone above and beyond coming out to you, when there was technically nothing wrong when you contacted them

or am I missing something

BTW what happened to the parking wars thread?

The way I read it David is that Swift messed up at the star with the bed design and then Lowdhams screwed up the recall/repair and Swift have now decided belt and braces and are putting extra security straps on all beds of this design, or maybe they should have been done at Lowdhams but weren't.

I disagree the bed should never have fell down in the first place clearly shoddy build quality from swift.
I think the op has every right to be upset with swift, I hope im wrong but if my friends motorhome is anything to go by the bed collapsing will be the least of your worries it won't be long before you are trying to sort out water leaks and damp issues but I hope I am wrong

Shoddy work by Lowdhams well I never ?????
They could not even change a set of wheels properly they left five of the six valves loose absolute clowns.
The only job I have not had to re do is when they fitted the new dg windows to the cab area.

No safety straps originally? Verging on criminal. How did the design get a CofC? Or did they submit one with safety straps and then drop the idea after the type had its CofC?

Also Lowdhams did not do the recall work properly.

And Swift are cutting back production - not surprising with this sort of publicity.

I wonder how long they will last.

I also wonder whether other shoddy bulders learn from these stories?

I also worry that builders with good reputations see the shoddy competition and start to cut corners. Fortunately there seems to be enough German money to support a range of good builders in Germany.

Th e recall is what is being done now, they failed to do it before handover, when the bed collapsed I thought Lowdhams had done the recall but apparently Swift don't pay they don't do it. The guys have been here well over an hour and stripped the bed down, they found parts missing and have just about put it back together and done the recall bits that entailed extra brackets straps and other bits on all four corners, they have been at it non stop.

So in short the bed was not put together in the factory correctly, and when it failed and Lowdhams fixed it they didn't fix it if that makes sense but I was told it was fine to use. Anyway all just about completed and the engineers have hundreds to get round and do all around the country, they do about 25 a week but my model takes the longest for some reason, some are just straps and not brackets on others.

If anyone has any questions to put to a Swift engineer let mw know and I will ask (y)

Have to ask, did they get the windows made or bought them from Hymer?

The first 3 I would tend to agree but at the cost of £200k plus they should be, the others do seem to have their fair share of hiccups if some of the threads on here are true and I would have no reason to doubt them.
Some on here said Hymer were good so I bought one, 2 years further on all faults now rectified, I had never had any issues with my previous Rapido and it was considerably less money.

All this negativity things go wrong sometimes, its how its dealt with to rectify the problem that matters, putting Lowdhams out of the equation from what I see Swift couldn't have done more and should be applauded.

I would say Swift are the sloppy ones and in fact Lowdhams have been sweeping up their messes, but on this occasion Lowdhams should have repaired it properly but Swift did send it out with parts missing, only discovered because of the national recall!

Well all done, I can now see the bed in the down position BUT the engineers discovered I have been given the wrong ladder, it is a folding ladder so unfolded for high and folded for low, in low its about 4" too short off the floor, you really could not make this up, I contacted Swift customer services and they said speak to the dealer, no offer of any help at all, I won't worry about that as I ma speaking with the head of operations very soon who is calling me to check on todays work and will make my views known!

Well, our NEW Swift Escape in June 2018 had loads wrong with it when it came from factory
*Command Control not connected to fridge ( because they had fitted with the wrong fridge!!)
*Hadn't fitted the STANDARD rear view camera

Plus loads of other stuff
They only sent 1 “engineer” to our house, and he confirmed, “ Yes, the camera is missing” ?
