As of today, 23/8/22 minus a few weeks! ( deposit paid, awaiting collection)
Good Morning!

Our trial weekend was a steep learning curve, including getting locked out of the van after only 4 hours on site! ( and both sets of keys inside).
The issue of question is the TV. We probably wouldn’t even bother with a TV if it hadn’t come with one already in.
The M/H will be on our drive tomorrow for a carpet/upholstery clean so it’s a good opportunity to have a look at the TV.
But that’s about as far as my knowledge goes.. looking at it!
It has several electronic boxes and numerous wires between them and looks quite intimidating!
It could be something so simple as a switch or dial not correctly positioned. I’m hoping someone with a bit of knowledge and a lot of patience might be able to talk me through checking it out.
You must be able to explain the obvious and not use too technical terms!
I’ve just paid my subscription so this is the first opportunity to justify such reckless expenditure to Mrs_in_npton.

Thanks in advance, and I will post a couple of pics of the set up tomorrow (Thursday).

Welcome to the fun. On any post it is always useful to give make and model of motorhome. They are all different.

Post pictures and also the year of the van I see it's an Autotrail.
Earlier models used to have freeview boxes plus a switching arrangement.

TV may need tuning to new signal source, does it have a booster fitted and turned on?

Depending on TV make:
Menu-Settings-Sources.
Digital retune/ first instalation (have you got an active TV antenna switched on?)

Sat retune/after finding sat signal (have you got a sat dish up?)

You'll have to retune on each different location

Ah the joys of camping 🤣

Bonjour ;bigwelcome: :drink:

On the top of the van there should be an aerial that is either round or pear shaped. If it is pear shaped the "pointed" end needs to point in the direct of your house aerial. Inside the van there will be the underside of the aerial which usually is an aluminium tube about 300 mm long. At the top a plastic clamping nut. Under the nut and you can push the tube up and turn it around. Do not forget to pull it down afterwards. You usually find the underside of the aerial in a cupboard or wardrobe. The cable coming out of the aerial will go into a signal booster box. Make sure it is switched on. There is usually a light.
We moving to different sites you will get used to retuning the tele.

Enjoy.

Good Afternoon

Thanks for your comments so far. Have just collected the MH from storage site and parked on the drive. Looking onto roof from upstairs to discover we have a solar panel on it! Dealer didn’t know nor did we, that’ll be another technical mystery.
Back to the Tv, the cleaners are about to do their magic on the carpet and upholstery so I can’t enter for a few hours till dry. Then we will start looking into all the TV paraphernalia!

Whilst looking on the roof did you notice a TV Ariel by any chance?

Good Evening

Ok, I’m in the M/H. I have got an Ariel thing, not a big dish.
TV is powered on.

Can anyone see what needs to be done?

Thanks

Hopefully, put your postcode in here ... https://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview-channel-checker .. and point the aerial at a transmitter near you. Keep in mind obstructions like buildings and trees may get in the way. Probably worth finding a high place to park to test the system. (Go to Detailed Transmitter View)

Your doing the right things. The tuning is not finding any channels though. Is the aerial in the wound up position?

Looks like everything you need is plugged in and switched on going by the led's in your photos.

Is the van in a built up area? Might not be receiving any signal.

Hi,
Currently it’s directly in front of house on the drive. Could it be that it’s not a freeview TV ? ( not sure if is or isn’t or how to check).

Well , locking up now so see if any more suggestions arrive for tomorrow.

Thanks

Could simply be the house blocking the signal. Where I park full time at work is perfect for electric, WiFi etc but it gets absolutely no signal.

Try knocking your house down or retuning the TV when the van is out in the open somewhere.

Freeview won't be anything to do with it. Your TV is ready to use the signal your aerial will send it. There's just no signal there currently.

You need to find a signal by trial and error with aerial, first make sure it is up, you undo a ring on it near roof (inside) to release, then make sure the amplifier is on then whilst rotating the aerial slowly watch the light change to green - meaning you have a signal you may have to change from vertical to horizontal via the little cranking handle dangling down depending on region, looking at your photos you have a 3 way selector to send signals from sources like DVD (labelled) etc to the telly, try changing it then back to telly and retune it - digital signals only, you have to do this every time you move camp, Oh and if moving set aerial to horizontal and rotate and lower as far as it will go or you may loose it to a tree etc.
edit, I cant get signal at home due to house so I went up the road near an open area and tried my first time :)

Any chance of photos of all the cables connected to the TV?

Your pic shows Freeview selected, does it get anything if Analog TV is selected?

Can you move the TV into the house and connect it to a working signal be that HDMI or Coax?

As an added complication the winding handle at the bottom of the aluminium pole tilts the aerial from horizontal to vertical. This is for certain areas that need different alignment.
You can get apps that yell you where to direct the pointy bit of your aerial.
Another tip. When you go home and pack up always point the blunt bit of the aerial forwards. It's like the cyclists helmets, pointed bit to the back.

Thanks all, a few things there to go at tomorrow!

Terrestrial TV ALWAYS needs retuning at EVERY stop.
That includes accurately pointing the aerial towards the local transmitter.
To find that direction look at house aerials, not other van aerials as many give up trying and just leave it pointing anywhere.
Satellite TV is doesn't need retuning.
The satellite is always in the same place and transmits the same signal no matter where in the UK and northern Europe

Get hold of a long Arial lead and connect you van TV to the house Arial. That will at least give you an idea that the van TV is working ok.
Then its just a matter of checking connections from the Arial. In fact you can connect direct to the in terminal on your booster, the one with the red light in the third picture

Good Afternoon

Thank you so much for your helpful tips and comments. I do hope you don’t think I’ve wasted your time but we have decided to take the TV out altogether. We weren’t that bothered about it and if it hadn’t been there we wouldn’t have put one in anyway.
Maybe there was a reason it was left in anyway.
A bit more space now on the worktop too.

Now… about this solar panel…..

I’ve already thought of that … we intend to use the reversing camera to look out for wildlife outside at night.
Problem is I don’t know how to use it yet!
