Is the only way to get 240 volt power for my telly and laptop by either being hooked up, having the generator on or having an inverter fitted ?
The RV has a 110 volt transformer in a cupboard and 240 plugs inside but as I wild camp often need it sorting.
There is a big american looking plug in a small locker outside which has to be changed from genny to hook up depending what im on.
I have a 300 watt inverter but cant work out which of the 3 batteries is leisure ?
any one know of anyone in lancashire that can sort it for me ?
cheers

with the engine switched off switch on an internal light, then disconnect the batteries on at a time until the light goes out. that will show which battery is your leisure. Sounds like you are going to need more batteries in any case. Turn up at one of the rallies someone will sort it out for you they are a great lot.

I know little about RV's happen someone will be along to help you there are plenty of owners on this site .

I run run a laptop using a transformer 12v to 19v dc these are available from maplins
Link Removed

Some flat screen tv's nowdays are powered using a mains transformer which gives 12v dc to the tv, if this is the case then you can connect using a 12v socket and this should be fine, providing your not charging the battery that you are using to watch tv as this may push the voltage higher than the tolerence of the tv.

I cant get the telly ( a waltham ...is that an american make ) out to see if it is 12v or 240v
I cant see any 12 volt sockets not that I know what im looking for and whats confusing me is the TV works when the big american plug in the locker is plugged into the genny, even when its off, but the 240 mains is on but other appliances dont.
BTW I cant get to meets as I work weekends though Ide love to.
so how big an inverter might I need ? I presume a 300w is insufficiant to power an lappy and telly all evening most nights ?

Wynnie, you really do need help with this one, you need someone who can get a look see at what you have on board and how its converted, you may(and I'm guessing)very well have a 110volt American TV, in which case it wont work over here anyway without other specialist converters no matter what power you give it as is cant use UK signals
a 300 watt inverter will run a TV and lappy BUT only for as long as your battery's last, so how big an inverter isn't really the question you should be asking, its how many batteries do I need and how can I keep them charged, the answer to that is, as many as you can afford and very large solar panels as you seem concerned about not using hook up or Genny
It is impossible to help you via the forum, as it appears the RV is new to you so you cant fully explain what you have or what you really need or want
Get someone in:thumb:

you can buy them here in the uk Link Removed ;but wether its 240v and 12v would need to know model etc

As i said i have'nt a clue about RV's ;but if your 240v/12v? tv works with this plug in the genny thats not running , it is either running off an inverter or a direct 12v

I think you'll find you need a bigger inverter and if i'm correct you have a starter battery and two leisure batteries, if you use your lappy and telly most of the night and assuming your batteries are in good condition then they probably wood need charging up every other day; but that depends on other 12v appliances.

wild camping power

hi
if you want to wild camp and have electric without running generators and using fuel you will need to invest in solar panels , we have 2 leisure batteries , 2 large solar panels and have converted as much as possible to run direct from 12v as inverters drain a lot of power quickly, any flat screen tv that has a 240v/12vdc power supply transformer will run directly from your batteries but to protect it from under/over voltages install a Amperor 12 Volt LCD/TFT Voltage DC-DC Stabiliser ( available from ebay ) we have a 100w inverter which is used for wifes hairdryer, hair straightners and 240v chargers .maplins do a laptop power supply which will give lower or higher than 12v for your laptop and run direct from 12v.
last week we were charging between 5a-20a/h, but have seen charging at over 30a/h in summer, even last week we never got short of electric when wild camping and went without nothing power wise.
invest in a good system and you will reap the benefits as will the enviroment
towtal in derbyshire are very useful for this type of work

Well Im just out wild camping in manchester and dont know if its me or this system thats useless !!
After being hooked up for a week I presume my 2 leisure batteries are fully charged, first night after having the blown air heating on for an hour, a shower, lights for a few hours batteries died. genny wouldnt start till the RV engine had been on for half an hour, genny goes on for almost an hour and i go to bed....after a few sherries out. !
next day after 20 mins of heating and radio on battery dies again so on goes the engine to start the genny......strange thing is the lights on the wall are they called idiot lights ?? say battery is charged ???? even when engine and genny are off .
So whats happening, the genny doesnt sound too good, do they call it hunting ? it doesnt sound as though its running smooth, is it not charging right ? do I need new leisure batteries, are the idiot lights buggered ??? or is it just the case that im expecting too much power for little fuel ?
I need an RV specialist in the north west if any one knows one or someone that knows what they are doing, ive asked a couple of places but all I get is "oohhh we dont do american stuff...all that 110 volt malarky"
Gotta go now my lappy is dying and not sure which battery my inverter is connected to, dont wanna break down all to gether.....HELP

You need to contact Duncan he's a Mobile RV specialist a member on here see his add at top of page Star Spangled Spanner, and he's north of me so not a million miles away
You need to get things sorted properly
you are spoiling your enjoyment of the RV and what it has to offer if set up correctly for your needs. Any info supplied here with the best of intensions will only be conjecture and at best guesswork as we cant work out exacly what you need, because we dont know what you have

hi
last week we were charging between 5a-20a/h, but have seen charging at over 30a/h in summer,

A statement like that is of no use unless you state where in the world you are and what size solar panels you have. My 50W panel was only producing 1/2amp yes half and amp in Devon full sunlight midday yesterday as opposed to up to 4 amps in the Summer. simple calculations are telling me you are either in Spain, have over 500W of solar panels, or just maybe your ammeter is not reading correctly. Most motorhomes would not have the roofspace for 500W of pane so it is either Spain or faulty meter.
The sun is not high enough in the sky at this time of year in the UK to give max power.

Thanks to great advice from Duncan at star spangled spanner I have added two more 110ah leisure batteries and have now attached my 300 watt inverter but the telly wont work on it ?
I believe it is a bog standard 14" colour 240 volt english telly so why wont it work off the batteries ?? they are fully charged, lappy works OK via inverter so cant understand it ?? when I turn it on I can hear the inverters fan kick in but the TV just clicks ????
any ideas ??????????????????
PS I have also tried it without what I believe is another plug powering the ariel ??

having never seen the TV i just know its a CRT type and not an LCD TV (im right, arent i ?) and you really need a bigger inverter or an LCD telly.

old fashioned tube tellies need a fair bit of power to kick into life and your inverter wont be up to the job. the TV needs more power than your inverter can deliver to start it so the TV shuts down before its even started then tries to restart going full circle.
it will, ofcoarse, start up straight away on hookup

LCD TV's dont need the surge that the others do, they need a constant supply is all.

maybe you should have put the money to the cost of a 15" LCD instead.::bigsmile:

theres a very good chance because its a tube telly it isnt digital, just analogue, and you could be in a digital only area.
only solution to that is a stand-alone digital freeview box to plug in it.

really not worth the bother for the cost of a digi LCD tv.....£100 or less from aldi, comet, currys and 12v as well.

The leisure batteries on an American RV are normally 6volt batteries

Cheers for heads up Frank:thumb:Yup we know that:thumb: and they double em up to make 12 volts, and a better system it makes BUT
Due to cost and availability 12 volt lesures are the norm over here:thumb:

AAHHH I get it....funny !!::bigsmile:
I'm a drag queen but know a man that does:ROFLMAO:

anyway
I cant see anywhere on the original leisure batteris what thier voltage is but at a garage recently they were putting out 12 volts un linked. If they were 6 volt would they bring the 12 volt ones down ?
also I cant find a booster to check if there is a light it must be behind the cupboard interior, all i know if I take out the 240 volt plug for the ariel there is no picture at all. ??
