We are in Portugal at the moment, and apparently the heater element has burnt out (according to local engineer who didn't even take cover off to look). What happened was we put the heater on electric and smoke started to come from the front grill along with a terrible smell. I have spoken to an engineer in the UK who will repair the heater on our return next week. Question is, as the system is now ten years old is it better to repair with new element or replace the whole heater.

Repair, fix, patch, a new one is very expensive, plus fitting.

There's not much to wear out. The electric element is a very robust device clipped to the aluminium fins on the outside of the gas heater. It won't be necessary to disturb the heater itself when changing the element so there's little point in considering replacing the whole device.

The model number is S3002. The engineer in UK also said the pcb might be affected. Apparently it is a very time consuming job to repair and much quicker to replace. Quoted £250+ for new unit plus fitting.
When we get back we are straight to work and will be living in the motorhome.
Many thanks for all the advice.
