No you need EHU to heat the water if switched to 230v
And yes both Truma 4 and 6e can be used to heat your van when the combi boiler is drained down

Actually strike what I said it looks as though you dont need ehu, I stand corrected sir

More details about Truma Combi 4 E
Truma Combi 4 E combines all the benefits of Combi 4 with those of an electric heater. As opposed to Truma Combi 4, it also has integrated heating elements. This allows you to run the heater at camp sites with the 12V power supply unit without the vehicle battery. Combi 4 E uses very little electricity. The heater runs in gas mode for self-sufficient use, in electrical mode at the camp site and in mixed mode when outside temperatures are low. In summer, Truma Combi 4 E heats just the water without running the space heater.

Like all Combi models, Truma Combi 4 E also combines space and water heating in one appliance. The heater provides comfortable warmth in your vehicle in just a few minutes. It also heats the water that you need for showering, washing dishes or washing your hands. And the best thing about it: you only have to install one appliance in your caravan or motor home. This saves space and weight: as opposed to an S heater, there are no obstacles that you have to walk around in your vehicle.

  • Digital CP plus iNet ready control panel: automatic climate control in combination with a Truma air conditioner
  • FrostControl automatically empties the water tank in cold weather

Not sure if it will work if drained down though!

Many thanks everyone. That's another piece to the jigsaw that is motorhoming.

Unfortunately, it is the sophistication of the Truma heating system that tends to be its downfall.

I used to be a great fan of Truma but found, on our last motorhome, that it caused persistent problems. Fault codes, tripping out, unnecessarily complex operation.

We now have the Whale system. Separate water heater and space heaters. Simple press button controls for gas/electric/combined. Heat output for space heater, press once for warm, twice for very warm, three times for hot etc.

It may be basic but it works.

OK, on gas the space heater is noisy on start up but it gets up to temperature quickly and then quietens down.

I am not normally a Luddite but got thoroughly fed up with the constant problems caused by the electronic control system for the latest, most modern, Trumas.

No doubt, others will disagree. Each to their own preference. I know my son-in-law would go for a system that he can operate, by phone, from a remote continent.

I have the Truma 4e in my 2017 Swift caravan and the Truma 6e in my Pilote motorhome and both have been 100% reliable , perhaps you've been unlucky

Quite possible. The story of my life.

Except for my marriage! (y)

The only problem I have had is when I have the wrong power source selected. Trying to run it on electric 1 or 2 or mix with no ehu will throw up error codes. Or having it on gas with the gas turned off will do the same and lock it up for 15mins before it can be reset.

You sound like you are trying to select electric as the power source but not on ehu. You can’t do that, your 12v system will not provide enough juice for that. It will run the fan ok if your power source is gas.

I agree with this post. We have had Truma systems exclusively for years, some completely gas, some with the electric as well. Our 2018 van's Truma was rock solid reliable. However, in our 2021 it is twitchy and finds the smallest reason to sense a 'problem'. The sensors and firmware seems to be ultra sensitive. As soon as I press the reset button on the main board twice, (long to switch off, then short to restart) it starts without a murmer. (I should add that to reset, I need to take the seat cushion, people etc off the seat, open the hatch, prise off the plastic cover to the main circuit board, then do the two button press and then reverse the cushions etc.....and breathe!
Once a day??? Give me simplicity every time. Too clever for it's own good. Hundreds of fault codes not mentioned in the manual, it has a fit if you change gas bottle!............

Ours too has been 100% reliable until now (9 years) Just had to replace the circulation motor which was £250, simple is better in my view.

Have had Combi boilers in a couple of vans but prefer our current system of separate fire with optional blown air and hot water boiler. Having the flue going through the wardrobe keeps clothes warm although having the fire in front of the wardrobe does mean legs get a bit hot when taking them out but with the Combi that was under his bed OH was far too hot at night. Also has the advantage of being able to use the blown air in hot weather to draw cool air in from under the van.
Wish the boiler controls were more accessible though. Trying to reach them under the bed in the morning is a bit of a pain, especially as I can never remember which has the blob of blue tack on it.
