Absolute beginners.
Hello, I'm doing some fettling in the M.H. and it was "parky" this morning -0.5c. So I thought, what a good chance to give the heater a run up. So whacked on the gas, tested it at the stove. All good. Set the Truma controls for van heat only. Mr Truma, he say " no". It showed a fault, which when I checked on line referred to, the heater needing water in the boiler to cool it. So I presume that though you can run just van heating, the boiler must have the water in the boiler to function correctly ?
Is this case, or do I have a genuine fault? Thanks in advance .
Regards.
Mike

I have combi 4e (assume similar) and you can defo have heat with no water in tank

Do you have a CP control panel or the twin rotary controls?
With the former, water and heating are controlled separately, so ensure the 'hot water' setting is off.
With the latter it's very important to understand that the 'flame' symbol means 'heat' on one ring and 'gas' on the other.

You can use the heating if you select electric only but if the boiler is empty it will not work on gas.

We have found that on electric and no water the heat output is quite pathetic really. Even on 2kw.

It’s not a fault. You can run the heating but hot water must be off if no water in the system.

Not correct it does work on gas with the boiler empty.
I've even managed to fire mine up on hot water with the boiler empty ran fine for hours without damage.

Maybe you have a different system to mine but if there's no water in the boiler then gas heating definately does not work on mine.

Agreed, I don't think it raised the temperature more than a degree in two hours on mine, virtually nothing coming out the vents at all.

Opposite to that, filled up and on mix 2 it really blasts out the heat.

O.K., so now sorted. I tried again this morning, and it was still flasing up the same fault code on the control panel [ ES17H].
So, I part filled the water tank, opened the hot taps and left running till a bubble free stream was flowing. Tried to fire it again, still a no go. Fathomed it must be a different fault to that on the fault finder index. Next I opened the boiler housing and took the connections cover off, where in you find the fuse, and L.E.D.s, and the reset button. The fuse tested out as OK.
so I gave the reset a press, still nothing. Much more looking and pondering, Eventually, I thought, push and hold the reset for 30secs or so, and after about10secs, it all burst into life, all the LEDs started flashing, ooohhhh, looking good. Reset the heating, and away it goes, lovely hot air after about 10mins. I left it running for about 30mins then switched it, left it to cool for a while and then emtied out the boiler on the frost valve. So, next test will it run again or trip out if set to heat without the boiler having water in, YES. Again, I left it running for 10mins or so, and heated up wonderfully. Straight forward, when you know :oops2: Thank you to all those members who offered up solutions and comments. Regards. Mike.
