When heating the water our Truma boiler will quite often release some pressure (and water) from the pressure relief valve. This can happen 2 or 3 times when heating water from cold before reaching max temperature. Is this normal? I understand the water will expand, but it does seem to do it rather often.

As you say it will do it due to water expansion because of the heat. Possibly your pump is keeping the system near the max pressure of the valve, so heating causes excessive releases. Mine does a single release each time.
