For some years I have fancied a half decent tripod, and recently I have been lucky on eBay.

Snapped up a Vanguard Veo 3+ in carbon. Lovely bit of kit.

Wow didn’t realise there was poor tripods out there

Is it all down to weight ?
Can't see that much else would differentiate a tripod.
Mines a cheapie and works just fine

As long as the legs lock can’t see any difference excepting weight.
Personally I think if I needed a tripod a heavier one would be more stable!

Big fan of the Vanguard tripods.

Quite a few years back, I went to the Photography Show (remember shows?) specifically to find a great tripod. Figured I'd be spending around £400 for what I wanted.

The Vanguard stand were clearing out the previous years carbon beast, reduced £400 to £200 (inc. head). It was so good I stopped looking and bought on the spot.

I used to use it in fairly deep water, the sea, for long exposure with long lenses - it was a great bit of kit. I got my money back 4 years later when I was trying to downsize my kit.

I then bought the (brand new at the time) Veo2 carbon travel tripod. So good I still use it


For those asking why some tripods are better - the biggest reason is stability. For example, if taking a minute long exposure with a bit of wind, it doesn't take much movement to ruin a shot. Even taking a half second shot in difficult conditions is hit-and-miss.
