After a hot summer and neglect, I discovered thousands of small hard dots of sap. This was difficult to remove, only pinging off with a fingernail.
In a rash moment I decided to go over my van with detailing clay. This removed the remaining sap

Look up iron x, dragons breath or purple rain.

These are trade names but good at removing most stuff. You will need to wash the complete van down well after using it though.

Does anyone know an easy way to clean tree sap from roof of van?
Just as a matter of interest...Brasso! It softens the deposits and when you allow it to dry off, it polishes up really nice Too. Ideal for tar on the sides off the truck and wheels off the roads

Why's that then, I was in the classic car trade for years and I've been using it to take tree sap and road tar off before repairs and paint on modern acrylic and water based paints, cellulose paint and fibre glass on both customer and my own car with no ill effects.
You use a petroleum based degreaser to wipe down paint just prior spraying paint.

I've never heard of a clay mitt before. Judging by the Amazon reviews I'm guessing they're pretty good.
Are there any downsides to using one?

I've just travelled to a place South West to have mjne sorted. The tree sap has removed the top layer of paint off the roof ... totally peed off but thankfully a nice guy and he wasn't going to fleece me. Tree sap is a pain ... elbow grease x 3 washes :(
