Travelling to Denmark? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,
We are looking to travel to Denmark in June, if that is possible, with 2 dogs.
We are looking at going through the tunnel rather than the ferry as it is faster. The original ferry from somewhere up the east coast is no longer running.
Does anybody have any tips or advice for such a journey?

Check out the speed limits and stick to them, lower limits, lots of speed traps (unmarked) and big fines. Well worth going though, some interesting places to visit and not over big. There are a few aires type places but AFAIK if you want to use campsites you need a Danish Camping Card

Have you had a look at Visit Denmark. Campsites operate an overnight system called "Quickstops" in which your get a discounted rate for a short overnight stay. Lego Land is well worth a visit at Billund and is much cheaper than Windsor. There is quite an expensive toll bridge to get onto the island of Copenhagen but when in Denmark Copenhagen is a must. It would be a shame to drive all that way and not visit the capital.

Well worth dipping in and out (3600km) of the Marguerite route which takes you to all the best bits of Denmark, just follow the sign when you see it...

Took the caravan there around 15 years ago. Got the ferry Dover to Calais turned left and drove north. It took a few days but in the end I have to say the long journey wasn't really worth it. Quite a boring country but the kids liked legoland.
Wouldn't go again as much more interesting countries to visit.

We bought the Nordic Camper book when we did Denmark, Sweden and Norway a few years back and found some lovely stops.

No idea where you live but have a look at Hull to Rotterdam crossing through the caravan club as they have some good deals just now.

We parked on a one hour parking bay for two nights, in Copenhagen, very handy for the Tivoli gardens, got a couple of parking tickets. (Don't recall paying them )

Went over the Orresund Bridge, then up the Swedish coast and got the ferry back from Helsinborg to Helsingor (about 15minutes)

The Harwich/Hook of Holland Stena Line ferry is still running even now.
(Only one boat a day at the moment though)
It's our prefered route to northern Europe

If you get the night ferry, you drive to Harwich have an early supper locally, they start loading at 9.30pm.
Get on, go to bed (dogs permitted in some cabins), wake up next morning in Holland, you are on the main roads by 8.30am, you can be in Germany for a late breakfast.

I presume the smaller bit of Denmark that contains Copenhagen and is close to Sweden must be really interesting because we found the week we spent travelling back down through the other bit after 5 weeks in Norway unbelievably dull. Other than Silkeborg man, green fields and scarily clean and tidy villages that was it. We just couldn’t face risking it in case it wasn’t though!

We had a gentle meander home through bits of Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. Hamburg was a bit of a b....r and was the reason we order a new van with a Comformatic gear box two months later. Nick’s knees were wrecked. We share the driving but realised too late to swap.

We did Norway in the van via the tunnel as we had the dog but normally in the car to Hirtshals for the ferry to the Faroes we use Stena Line to the Hook.

Hamburg? Work round there is due to go on for a few more years yet with frequent closures of the tunnel so we usually cross the Elbe north of the city on the Wischafen/Gluckstadt ferry. 35 minute crossing for around €14 for the car, van more of course but we went around Hamburg in that (nightmare).

From the Hook we now go north past Amsterdam and cross the Afluitsdijk and stay north in Holland and Germany. Four ferries usually on that crossing (Wischafen) so never too long to wait but has been an hour if Hamburg has more problems than usual.

There is a bigger ferry supposedly starting up again in the spring, Cuxhaven to Brunsbuttel, 75 minutes or so.

We took the Elbe ferry going out and had an hours wait , hence the stupid decision to come back via Hamburg. We wish we’d gone back via the Elbe ferry that’s for sure. I think the Hamburg route added at least 3 hours of misery.

If that was the road we were on then I think we said much the same at the time, we couldn’t believe it. Some of the diversions took us through what seemed like half built residential areas, at one point we wondered if we had gone back in time and they were still rebuilding from the war. It was a sunday so I dread to think what a weekday would have been like.

Having worked as a cowman in Denmark many years ago, I would ignore the negative comments, places like Ribe, Aarhus, the island of Funen, Odense are lovely places, the people great and very pro British. If you want to see Kopenhagen may be better to leave the van and go by train, but remember it is a big city like all the other big cities, so just as London is not typical of the UK neither is Kopenhagen of Danmark. It is a very safe country very keen on the environment, very rural they have a festival similar to the goose fair in Logumkloster which used to be a real Danish celebration. On the island of Romo a great beach, with lots of Germans, nearby is a lace museum which is worth a visit as it was where flyers who were shot down were taken prior to escape to the UK our family were treated as heroes last time we went there.
You won't find much bacon there as most of it comes here.

Harwich to Esjberg is the route we used. Not sure if it’s still operating but will really cut down the driving.

Harwich to Esjberg went years ago, we used to use it to get to Hirtshals for onward ferries. Would highly recommend the Wischafen ferry, it's a lovely river crossing. We used to stay the night at the aire in Bremerhaven, very busy aire but loved the town. There are two village aires near Wischafen, all very cheap, and another at the ferry.

In Ebeltoft supermarket a few years ago, wine prices on promo for good quality wine were as cheap as France, but you had to buy a box of six. We were surprised as wine is traditionally expensive and we believe people travel to Germany to buy it.

Denmark , very very strict on parking ! I was in centre of Aarhus in free aire , and watched the keen parking warden handing out tickets by the dozen ! Also in motorway services motorhome got booked parked in truck area . Don’t miss the Viking burial ship at ladby .

We go to Denmark every year as swmbo is Danish, Have done a few routes but amble up thru Belgium Holland Germany and get the ferry via puttgarten . We prefer the tunnel and never had any hold ups even around Hamburg .We are lucky to have somewhere to stay with family but do use campsites even Copenhagen (aarhus ) .Denmark can be expensive but no more if you shop carefully than here even campsites .It's a beutiful country and very freindly people .When we come home great Aires at Munster and A short walk to the vet (40eu) for our two dogs

not sure I would want an overnight stay on a ferry anytime soon, Tunnel brilliant and you don't have to be close and personal with anybody just drive on and drive off.
