Your passport has to be less than 10 years old, which I discovered recently! Mine had an extension of time over ten years, as I must’ve renewed early, so rather than having until July 23 to sort it, I had until September 22! So worth a check!

Which is why it's better to go on one of the Dover/Calais crossings (we go through the tunnel), as the crossing is shorter and you won't need your lead to be as long as you would if taking a different route ....

Rather than a cumbersome long cable take a couple. I take a 25m and a 10m. Only rarely need to use two but have in France, Netherlands and on a CL in the UK. The 10m is the most used as usually post is close. Two pin adapter rarely needed but worth having, mine is only 6 inches long so takes up little space.
