Hi all

Currently out exploring the Lofoten/Versaelen Islands in Artic Norway...not in our MH I must add....we didnt know it was going to actually arrive when we booked this trip lol!...but just to say I have been surprised to see that one people are actually out driving their Motorhomes here at this time of year and two that sites that are open! We saw one in prime location overlooking sea at Bleik and it had hook ups and even a Sauna hut and a few Motorhomes in it and have come across a couple more since.

We cannot wait to explore Norway in ours, now it has arrived but was thinking more Spring/summer time! I am tempted with a winter trip now...but it was minus 14c today so thats hardcore motorhoming and requires a full set of snow tyres lol!

Just thought I would let you all know incase anyone was thinking of it!

I took this photo, hope it works! Thought it the perfect spot to park up....

Must have been a big sauna hut.

I remember getting frozen walking across the bridge from Tromso to Tromsdalen in July, so you can keep a winter trip.

We went to Norway for four Christmas and new year trips, just before the Ferries stopped.

First Time we traveled in Our VW T5 Shuttle, staying in a house by lake Tyrifijorden. -Ferry to Kristiansand

Second time we went By motorhome To Haugesund by Ferry Staying in a brand new Lodge in Ƙvre-Ramse (Over Ramse). The family who owned the Lodges surname was "Ramse" and the town was named after the from the 400's

Third and fourth time Ferry To Bergen - Touring in our motorhome. Skiing in beitostĆølen and Hovden.

Lots of people staying in caravans and Motorhomes. we managed -27c. Our then Motorhome was a Euramobil with double floor and excellent insulation. I had re-wired the Mercedes Factory fitted Ebespacher Diesel ADD heater to work as a pre-heater. Just as well, came in very handy as did the Webasto Hot Shot Washer fluid heater.

There's a few I follow on Instagram that are up that way over winter in old merc vans. They seem to seek out the cold and snow.

Each to their own but not for me. Norway Sweden etc is on my bucket list but will be spring summer time for me I reckon

Sorry only just seen your question. We went on our own. We've been 4 times now so feel quite confident doing it. We fly direct to either Tromso...for touring either Lyngen alps or Senja or we do an indirect flight via Oslo to Harstad/Evennes for Lofoten. We rent a 4x4 car and stay in Airbnb's. About half the cost of a tour but obviously you are on your own so depends what you like doing. We enjoy photography, particularly my husband, I just love being in artic winter climate and hope for night time aurora's. I have lots of photos lol! Will see what I can find.

If you go Tromso area there are lots of trips you could do with a guide. We did a half day on a husky farm in Senja spending time with the dogs before and after sleigh ride. You can go snowmobiling if you wish. We went whale watching too, but Lofoten is much more about stunning landscapes and the sound of silence is deafening ā¤ļø and their bridge engineering is amazing!

That sounds some amazing trips! I'm guessing you had snow tyres, did you fit them here before you went or get them fitted on the continent?

Apologies only just seen these replies I must have missed while in transit!

On the T5, we just had all-season. There was no law to say you had to have winter tyres.

Other times we went. We had winter tyres on motorhome

Are you doing winter? We are thinking of doing a spring or autumn one, but if we get brave may look in to how much a set of snow tyres would be!
Ah, still undecided about that. I fancy late September ish, the wife wants to go in winter to see the Northern Lights. Trouble is with that is the short days and trying to cram everything in. I prefer the more relaxed approach of going a bit earlier in the seasonā€¦we can always do a Scottish Highlands winter trip in hope of the Borealis, so weā€™re going late sumner. šŸ˜†šŸ„³šŸ„³

We were in Tromso and further north in November a few years ago, not in mh.

I'm not sure winter tyres would be adequate, virtually all locals were using studded tyres.

Yes sorry I meant studded snow tyres. I was just thinking you wouldnt want them on to drive from home in the UK as it would be quite a distance before you reached snow but am not sure how much they wear and what is possible but something for me to look in to. Need to get travelling at home first and get to know our new MH and confidence before we attempt colder climes! Think will head South in the autumn this time, need some warmth!
Its scary being passed by those speeding HGV drivers in heavy snow, what fantastic skills they have, although we did see one off the road on our way back to the airport!

Just back from Iceland, not in the mh, almost every vehicle including hgv's had studded tyres, very useful on the ice.
Absolutely! We were in Iceland in October, we had hoped to see the Volcano but it stopped erupting day after I booked flights, typical! Was nice to be back though and we managed to go to Jorkusarlon which had been on our list as not made it before on our mid-winter trips, was worth it. Hope you had a lovely time.
