We are going through the tunnel on Monday 24 July and thought of going along the Moselle. We thought we would just go and not plan anything but as time has got nearer I'm a bit concerned about travelling in July - school holidays, should we book campsites, though probably too late now and what are the Aires like?

Any suggestions of which way to go once we're through the tunnel and any good places to stop and visit. We are not taking bikes this time so some public transport might be handy as we are not great walkers. Also which side of the river? We don't know anything about the area at all. We only have two weeks and want to see as much as possible.

Many thanks as I'm sure someone will have some wonderful experiences to share with us.

One of our favourite Aires is Pont a Mousson which is on the Moselle. It's around € 9.50 a night including EHU, showers and toilets and an easy stroll into Pont a Mousson. It's run by the Captainerie.

Great trip. Either side is good, use both. Plenty of stellplatz to choose from, no need to book. Some wineries have stellplatz. Take a look at all the town en route, especially Bernkastell Kues.

So many Stellplatz along the Mosel on both sides of the river, you won't have a problem finding somewhere to spent the night.

We've just travelled the length of the Moselle from the Pont-a-Mousson aire in France, via Luxembourg (stayed at the Camping Du Port Schwebsingen marina - nice food at the on-site restaurant), then following the river through Germany. Reached the end of the Moselle this morning! - currently at the Knaus Campingpark in Koblenz (a campsite and not cheap at nearly 35 euros, but a magnificent view of the Moselle and Rhine coming together).

We haven't booked any sites and have had no difficulty in finding places to stay, although the big campsites have looked very busy. We've mostly used the CamperContact app (full version), which gives site coordinates you can programme into the satnav.

A couple of stopping places we liked which had plenty of space when we were there were the An Den Zwei Pappeln at Ensch (6 euros, plus option to have bread delivered, plus friendly hotel bar across the road) and Moselvorland at Valwig (6 euros, close to a short stony beach from where the dog could paddle in the river!).

Enjoy your trip!

Take care when going wine tasting, taste enough and you will stagger away carrying many boxes.

We have done the route in High season and as already been said you will find somewhere to stop. The only time we found difficulty was when the respective village had a Festa on. In the past these were in the norm held in September. In recent years they have been brought forward into July and August to catch the holiday season. The villages were busy and we found by looking up the list of dates and arriving a day or so ahead of the the carnival we got a spot and had a great weekend and and moved on. We intend to go over for a few weeks at the end of August
