Does anyone travel with there dogs in the garage of there motorhome, in a cage obviously. As ours is so big and has lighting, heating and tie down points it looks like a hotel room on wheels for them. They always travel in cages and always have. This is where there going to sleep at night and just wondered if there where any issues like fumes etc. Although our exhaust is about 6m further up the front I can't see any problems.

I would be more worried about the consequences of someone running into the rear of your MH ... there's very little protection there so whilst you would survive your dog would most likely not.

Noise would be a bit of an issue too as it will be noisy in there when travelling. Another thing to be concerned about is the effect of the movement on your dog ... if you've ever sat at the rear of a bus going fast you'll know how much more you feel the sideways movement so you could end up with a rather 'green' dog!

I know some people do it but I certainly wouldn't as I love my dogs too much.

Just a thought, if you still think it's possible, one of you should sit in the garage whilst the other takes the camper for a quick spin round and see how it feels then at least you will know what your dogs would experience.

I wouldn't either, for the same reasons that Mel gave and also one of my dogs doesn't travel well if he can't see outside.

Some people do as I have seen them, some put a window into the garage door so they can see out and get a bit of air possibly.

Hi Dub
Ia there a particular reason you would want them to travel in the garage?
An explanation of your situation may get you better advice

I've seen people who put their dogs in during the day when stationary but not seen anyone actually travel with them in there.

Fair comment, I only actually know of one for sure, we met them at a ferry port before we had the MH.

We were in France one year and a big motor home owned by a mother and son had 11 pekinese dogs on two levels in the garage fitted with windows and air con into it. They travelled round the country going to dog shows,
Not sure I would do that . But the dogs were healthy and showed no distress of going into the garage.

However I have also seen dogs in little trailers behind motorbikes again in France.

As long as the dog has fresh water fresh air and some room to move around they are very adaptable.
I think it's more to do with distance travelled and time that they are in a place.

The garage is a great place for a pooch to sleep in. They feel very safe enclosed.
I think everyone's situations are different our pooch (a lab) travels on the floor on his bed under the table
and he wears a harness clipped into the seat belt.

Dogs are like kids very adaptable.

and both cost a fortune

I wouldn't fancy putting my dogs in a cage in a locker to be honest.

Besides, my dogs would trust me once to put them in and I suspect, they wouldn't make the same mistake twice LOL

Mind you, two 45Kg long haired German Shepherds laying between the two cab seats is a sight to behold

Getting better month by month.
There is a hire company, Landcruise, who have converted a rear bunked MH into a "RoverHome" by removing the bottom bunk and putting a dog gate between the garage and hab area. Mine travel on the rear bunk, so technically above the garage area, but are restrained by harnesses so they cannot come off the front, but can move up and down the bed. Although I do not have any knowledge of the crash testing of motorhomes, I would certainly think it is comparable to carrying your dog in the boot of your car, but I wouldn't enclose them completely though.

Crash test on motorhomes i am sure is a farce.
The cab will be to spec
The rear seats unless a specific cab type seat wont be.

the seat belts are fitted to the chassis however most of the seats them selves ar made of chip board.
The walls of the van are glass fibre and polystyrene.
Its a bit like the protection you get wing walking. A harness (they do give you a warm helmet)
(no mucky comments)

So if your dog is happy in the garage. Then it's a happy dog.

ahh little dogs running round the dashboard
waiting to be sling shot missiles
Don't worry it will be the fridge and the water tanks that kill you lol All safely screwed down with wood screws into a plywood floor

Followed milliseconds later by the staccato barage of numerous tins, cans and bottles :xrofl:

At Dusseldorf show this year there was a company that specialised in adaption and storage ideas for dogs in Motorhomes (doesn't sound quite right but you know what I mean)

When we were parked up outside Calrlos's office before going to morocco, we saw a French van with with 2 dogs in the garage, and another with the garage door open, looking inside we saw 3 parrots ...

Exactly. Would you put your kids in their ? No, then don't put the dogs in either. Nearly as bad a those towbar mounted dog carriers. should be illegal.

I agree entirely with what Mel says. Wouldn't dream of travelling with my dogs in the garage. Even a small shunt could be fatal. Your dogs trust you, and depend on you for their security. Please don't betray that trust.(y)
