Can anyone recommend an insurer who'll cover bikes over 125cc as part of an annual policy. I don't mean riding your own bike, but one you either hire or are given use of.

I can only find Carole Nash who want £750+ for annual cover. Every other quote I've got either doesn't cover motorcyle riding or limits engine size to 125. As I've got the use of a friends Harley whilst in the states, I want to make sure we're covered.

How about asking your friend if they can add you to their insurance and pay the extra?. In car terms I would expect insurance to drive any car anywhere in the world to cost a fortune.

Numerous Motorcyclists get caught out with the 125cc rule. They are told the policy covers riding motorcycle, which is correct, but not over 125cc.

We went away with friends to Europe, talking about travel insurance he and his wife discovered they weren’t covered for riding over 125cc. They were also under the misapprehension that their motorcycle insurance covered them anyway.

If it’s not your bike, then it could become difficult / expensive. Could you become a named rider on your friends policy? I suppose you having a UK licence may also be a complication. 🤷‍♂️

Good luck. (y)

I believe the OP needs travel insurance so joining his friend's motorbike insurance won't deliver.
When he said cover bikes over 125 cc I assumed he meant vehicle insurance especially when he mentioned Carole Nash.

I think most insurers would offer a policy extension that meant bikes larger than 125cc could be ridden subject to loading the premium. Have you approached a traditional insurance broker to ask?

It’s quite a common restriction that’s aimed at preventing folks hiring larger capacity machines overseas.

Another restriction that I’ve highlighted on here before is that, with many companies, you are only covered on your own >125 machine IF YOUR JOURNEY STARTS AND ENDS IN THE UK. This could be problematic for those taking bikes in the back of their MH.

However, I think last time I raised this issue, another funster identified a company that didn’t have this restriction.

Off topic, sorry, but I'd love to know which company. Might save me a lot of time.

Update finally got a Travel policy from Carole Nash, covering riding any sized motorbike, on and off road riding. It wasn't cheap but at least we have the piece of mind that if anything does go wrong, we're fully covered.

I'm with Carol nash. Annual multi trip insurance £90.
£750 sounds a bit steep.
Try trailfinders they do specialist travel insurance.

Not when you've got medical conditions to declare. They really, really up the stakes. In addition the more days you go away for each time, ups the price. Ours is set at 65 days each trip with a total of 185. With worldwide travel.

Especially if you need medical cover in the USA which is renowned for being expensive

I use insure&go. I pay an extra £20 per annum for bikes of any size for the full year. There is no mention of whether the bike is mine or not. I’m guessing that I just need to be legal to ride them.

Thanks Chris, you've just saved me a fair amount of cash. If you ever see Elsie the MH in the avatar when you're out and about, give us a knock because I owe you at least one very, very, large drink.

P.S. Thank goodness for cancellation opportunities on newly taken out policies.

The devil is in the wording detail of your policy.

Our travel insurance states they have to be our bikes (my wife rides her own) and our journey needs to start from the UK. (y)

Thankfully we're both covered as rider and passenger for cruising around the Sierra Nevada, on and off road.
