the temperature drops and the water drains out, is this just the water in the heater tank or all the onboard water?
So if I'm camping on a cold night do I awake to find I have no water onboard?
Apart from keeping the heating on how do I stop this happening?
Thank you.

I think you may have answered your own question regarding use of the heating. If it's an automatic frost protection dump valve, I think you need to ensure the internal temp is kept above a certain level (circa 6 or 7 degrees Celsius? I can't claim to know the specifics) to prevent it being invoked.

Depending on the type of drain valve there are numerous home 'remedies' to keep the valve from opening, but do you really want to risk the water freezing and junking your boiler?

It would help hugely if you could tell us exactly which heating system you have and what the motorhome is as well as its age. Very difficult to give an accurate reply without those bits of info.
