I'm looking at buying a 2020 Malibu 540 DB this has a transverse double bed, any ideas or suggestions on turning this into a single bed?.

I shall be visiting the dealer over the weekend as he has the vehicle in stock, wonders will never cease.

I assume you mean keeping it transverse and just reducing the bed width? I can't think that it would be difficult, I suppose it depends why you want to make it narrower, eg if its to be able to use the rear to store a bike and keep the bed towards to the front, or remove the front part to give more circulation space. Whatever you do make sure you keep the original stuff safe so that you can put it back as it should be for when you come to sell in the future.

I think you need to explain more about what you want to achieve, e.g. transverse single, longitudinal single, storage space etc.

Hi Geoff,
Many thanks for your reply.
I just don't need a double bed so it would make the MoHo more enjoyable to be able to just have a single bed.
Not sure there is room to have the bed going fore to aft rather than port to starboard. (blimey I never knew I was nautical)
Will probably find out more when I see the van but information is king so I will keep on with the ideas.
I can imagine I will achieve a lot of room!

Thanks Minky, Mel?

Sure will keep all the original in as new condition.
I don't mind a bit of tinkering and enjoy working out a problem, I may need to reconfigure the whole of the bedroom area,🥵

I run a budgerigar rescue center (50 birds + at the moment) so am not looking to go away for long periods couple of days would be a treat, rest of the time its days out and picnics with the wife.

I may even sell the Volvo and use the MoHo as my only vehicle, with costs as high as they are and climbing might be my best idea yet.

I do not see any benefit in changing it as there is not much to gain and if you tinker with it it would be more difficult to sell later on.
If my wife and I were 20 years younger I would have said that it’s more enjoyable in having a double bed. 😀

What you have not said is what you want to do with the space saved.

Almost certainly a single cannot be fore-aft in the existing space.

Obviously if you make the double transverse to a single transverse that has to be at the front side of the existing double, so access to any use of the other half has to be across the single bed.

Remember you'll need to factor in the cost of a single mattress to replace the transverse double.

My honest answer would be to look at a different layout as the one your looking at isn’t for you.
Why not buy something with bunk beds and remove One of the bunks.

Just been informed by the dealer that they will only book me in for a demo on the deposit of £1000, if I don't buy the van they will keep £75 as an admin fee.
I think you can guess my response.
Call me old fashion but I think the dealers are taking us for a ride, a second hand, a two year old van with mileage of 5600 has gone up £20000in price and they want me to pay for the privilege of seeing the van.

Seriously? the world has gone mad.

As for making the double a single? I would say easy enough if the rest of the van is right go for it, I made our twin North South beds in a huge transverse East West.

I think that would be deemed an "aggressive trading practice" and therefore illegal under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. You should have a word with the local Trading Standards. They really should not be doing that.

Much easier for me to leave Harbour Motor homes alone and to look elsewhere, get my message?

I've been having a shuftie at the brochure:

I'm assuming your wife doesn't go with you from what you said earlier! :giggle:

Unless you are short or 'fold' yourself up when sleeping you won't be able to have a fore/aft single bed as the double's largest width is only 1.37cm (about four and a half feet) so it would have to be transverse. It wouldn't be difficult to put the single bed at the very back and get a memory foam single mattress (so you can cut it to fit properly, and as the partition below the bed is definitely removable you could move it further back or leave it out completely then use the 'vacant' area but I'm not sure what benefit it would be to you.

Of course having a double bed all to yourself is beneficial as you can sprawl out and/or use part of it for storing bits and bobs on if you want.

Hi,

You are correct, I have looked and even with my level of tinkering it would be too big a job.
I have looked at other MoHo and the story is similar so I'm still looking.
I will at a later date write up my experience of trying to buy a new van.
