Rather than hijack another thread I've posted on I thought I'd start another specific to my dilemma.

I have a new van that has been parked at the dealers for the last month and is ready to collect.... from Germany.
I reckon it could be some time before its likely that I can both fly over and drive it back so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of having a vehicle delivered from Germany (or Europe) to the UK? Ideally I'd prefer to visit, inspect and snag the van personally but am considering my options should the travel situation not change over the next few months.

I've waited over 8 months now and I want my van!

Depending on what van it is I think the maximum height allowed for towed trailers in German is 4m.
Any van around 3.2 or higher may have issues.

4m is indeed the height limit. The only option is to get a specialist transporter who moves abnormal loads and runs low loader that are capable of keeping the load height to a minimum. I have a friend who runs a low loader 25cm off the floor, just to give you some idea.

I think your first port of call should be the dealer. I'd be surprised if he couldn't arrange the transport for you.
The question is, 'Do you trust him?'
If, on balance, you do - then I wouldn't hesitate in getting it transported over. You could get him to take a lot of photos of the van for you, before he sends it. Apart from potential prangs during transit, any problems should be covered by warranty anyway. Having it transported would also relieve you of the headache of driving it to the continental port on third-party insurance.
You could then spend the next 6 weeks or so going through the DVLA/VOSA process, by which time (fingers crossed) things might have eased up a bit here and your brand new van would be ready to use. (y)

It's a panel van, 6.0 metres long, 2.6 metres overall height. I've met the company owner and trust him so maybe delivery is worthy of exploration, I'd rather it was here than sat in their yard for the foreseeable.

Mmmm, sounds expensive ☹️
Think from memory the normal low loader bed is about 700mm high.

At 2.6M, It would likely travel on a "normal" recovery vehicle?. Suggestion? do you have recovery in place?. Speaking to them might be of assistance?.

I know someone who had a big Carthago Liner transported from Cathago City in Southern Germany to home in West Sussex. Carthago City arranged it, came on a transporter at the same time with another van for a dealer. Cost was £1500 it was about 4 years ago.

That sounds about right. Our boat trailer runs 250mm off the floor but if we have a really tall boat to move, up near 5m in height I always give it to a another fella that can get them really low. So low in fact that the belly pan of his 4 axle rear steer tends to scrape cats eyes out of the road.

I think the op should be fine though with his 2.6m height, not too expensive one would think?

Always better if you can get a back load though, would expect about £3-4K for a run to Germany and back.
Not sure what the tunnel cost for commercial but I paid £1k for the Isles Of White ferry years ago when I sold a dozer and scraper box to a chap over there, no wonder he smiled when I said I would deliver??

It's a Malibu Charming 600GT, I dream about it at least twice a week, sad innit ??
Very nice. We came very close to buying one, but the dealer messed us about over our part exchange, so we went elsewhere and bought a Globecar. We’re happy now, but the Malibu was lovely.

I think you’re going to have to be patient. My son’s new car is sitting in a Dealers on the south coast of England. He’s in The Netherlands, just on the German border.

He can’t collect it and the Dealership can’t deliver.

Which bit of Germany? My niece is on Mein Schiff 4 (lead singer) at the moment and her parents are wondering how she is going to get home when they actually dock, I think in Bremerhaven. She could pick up the van and drive it back....both problems solved!

I'm not having a WOMAN drive my nice new van!!

I joke of course, if I get really stuck I'll message you, thanks!

International TD15 with a 15cube box behind. same size as a D6 but better to drive?
Built a dual carriageway on the island and it was cheaper to bring materials over from the mainland is some cases!!

These guys transported my Flair on 3 occasions on a low loader. They are excellent and my Flair was 9.2m long and 3.5m high. It wont be cheap!

My wife has a new car sitting at the dealers about 5 miles away but can't get it as they are shut.

And 'Umpteen' years later it's still THE dual carriageway on the island.
