I'm a newbie
We have just recently bought a trailer to tow our Smart Car on the back of our motorhome. Can anyone please give advice regarding insurance etc., required on top of our usual vehicle insurance and if there is anything else we need to consider.
Many thanks

Car trailers need to be maintained and serviced too. As they sit for extended periods, you need to check the tyres well before any use

Insurance for mine is incorporated with the van insurance. The car is also covered by it's own policy. Pay attention to your trailer brakes as they sometimes don't last long if a lot of harsh braking is used. Remember the trailer brakes are working much harder than the towing vehicle.

You may also want to check your breakdown cover, covers the trailer.

And make sure the van has a proper and decent tow bar as I have seen a couple of woefully inadequate attempts that were just bolted to the garage floor and were certainly not type approved.

We are with Safeguard. I confirmed with them that the policy allows us to tow a trailer, which it does (third party cover). Checked with car insurers (Royal Sun Alliance) and they noted the car would be towed. Having notified them we are now comprehensively covered for the car when being towed.
