Does anyone know of a way of taking your motorhome to the USA or is it usual just to hire one over there?

I know 2 lots of people who have done this by buying a motorhome (using relatives addresses) toured for 5 and 6 months respectively, then sold the vehicles for just a couple of thousand less than they paid. Cost far less than hiring and none of them had owned a motorhome before.

Another friend, a widow, hired a huge RV in Canada and drove part of the Rockies, on her own.

Something I'd love to do but not brave enough in my old age!

It really depends how long you intend to go for. Not worth buying or shipping yours for a short trip far too expensive. Also you would need to convert the electrics. by installing a transformer I expect. Shipping is easy enough loads of companies do that, we shipped our motorbike to Houston last week and we fly out Monday to start a 15000 mile trip to Alaska and back.
We spent 15 months over a period of 3 years touring the states did all 49 and 56000 miles. Bought a 38ft Rv and a Jeep to tow behind, bought at $2 to the pound sold at $1.50 it cost us less than £5000 in capital, but you cant always rely on exchange rates to go in your favour. We've considered shipping our Hymer and doing Canada as well easily do-able.
Whatever you do Good Luck :thumb:

Some buy and then ship or sell again but we have hired three times, the last which was last year we picked up a one way special deal where the new RV needed relocating from Chicago to Las Vegas.
The company over here that we booked through and specialise are www.cruiseamerica.co.uk
The re location deals are generally cheaper with all insurance and accessory costs covered. :thumb:

Check out The escapees club, livingstone, Texas, good for an address for licence and insurance, etc, if required, and have quite a few sites of their own, very helpful

We hired from El Monte, and toured the Rockies and west coast, Yelllowstone and Mt Rushmore Grand Canyon etc. We have booked another El Monte this fall, for 88 days to do the East Coast and R66.
