Tomorrow a Dutch couple that we met in Croatia a month ago cross into Iran for a six week tour!

What an amazing journey!
They have to take notes and update their blog when they arrive in Armenia, no blogging in Iran.😱

I confess I'm a teeny bit jealous 😍
We wish them well 🙂

That's a brave couple
I don't think I'd be happy touring in Iran, I'm sure most locals will be hospitable and friendly but It's a pretty lawless place by all accounts ?
Good luck to them, it'll be quite a story

Rather toasty as well I think in July, too hot for me :hot:

What !!!!!! Not for me Thanks.

Gina
What’s not to like about the risk of being taken prisoner on some falsely engineered charges to then be used as a political pawn?

Shame really, I suspect it would be a fascinating place to visit given its history.

spoke to couple in Austrailia in 2016 that drove to OZ over a year in the MH and said Iran and Iraq had some of the lovliest places, but the destruction from the tyrant was shame to see

French chap I know did Syria,Azerbaijan,Iran , Kazakhstan etc some years back when war was on in Syria. Had new wheel bearings fitted in Aleppo.

It's just Brits that have issues in Iran. o_O

35-40 ish years ago a girl I worked alongside married an Iranian and his parents came over here for the wedding. Both completely western, excellent English speakers and lovely people. Both directors of a Bank - she retired cos no way was she going to suddenly start wearing the outdated dress the Ayatollah(s) mandated when she never had in her life before.

I have toured by motorbike. Amazing country and wonderfully hospitable people. One of the most interesting places I have visited. No need to be on an organised tour or have a government guide unless you are travelling on a UK or USA passport.

Yes indeed!
I've read exactly the same of most middle Eastern and Asian countries.

Same reason I would never go to Dubai. I would be arrested on the first night I am sure :X3:

Gina
Obviously i have a very different view of Dubai having lived there for decades. It's not as you maybe thinking..........it is however very hot this time of year.

One country that sometimes gets unwarranted bad press is Oman. What a beautiful people and country. Been many many times.

Yes I’m a big fan of Oman have been many times when working with Omantel in the early 2000’s.

Two things that are stand out memories, I left my wallet in the back of the taxi from the airport to hotel. As soon as the driver realised, he drove all the way back and wouldn’t accept anything from me for doing so!

The second is the generosity and hospitality of the people. It could be something to do with them trying to impress me from a business perspective, but in nearly ten visits I was presented with gifts every time. They were all low monetary value, but as they got to know me, where increasingly tailored to me and personal.

Ooh and the tuna fishing in the gulf of Oman is amazing! 🎣

Id love to visit countries like iran, iraq, Afghanistan etc .

Like most countries i think their people would be fine ....its their governments that are dodgy. They cause/create the wars etc the people just suffer for it.

I learned a long time ago people are people regardless of what colour , race ,religion or sexual orientation they are .

Some of these countries look amazing , i follow a lot of instagram overlanders and travellers and im constantly jealous of some of the places they go

Love the place and I’ve been very lucky as all of my visits were military based, so met some amazing people and friends and would go back in a heartbeat.

I agree 100% with your comment. I worked for UNHCR in Peshawar and had to travel to Kandahar every month to liaise with the Taliban government. Armed escorts, guns everywhere, but the hospitality and kindness was exceptional and I always felt comfortable. Afghanistan is beautiful in places. The people are the toughest you will find anywhere. They have to be just to survive early childhood. The thing that always touched me was that the poorer people are, the more generous and hospitable they are to travellers/visitors. In Afghanistan/Pakistan if you trek through a village, particularly in the mountains, every house will offer you tea and a bite to eat. All payment will be refused, and indeed considered insulting. Not a reaction you will encounter if trekking in the Home Counties. Particularly if you are a foreigner.

I stayed in Peshawar for awhile in what was then called the Continental Hotel. It changed it's name then got blew up.
I was taken to the foot of the Kyber Pass and clearly saw gun stations here and there.
Coming back we went through a village that was having that festival where they whip themselfes on the back with chains and sharp objects (forgot the name of the festival now) anyway we got proper chased away, that was a bit scary. Blood everywhere.

Is the diesel cheap?
Currently a €uro cent per litre - users of Sterling would be paying the equivalent of about 8p for 10 litres...
I knew it was subsidised what with Iran being an oil producing country but I had no idea it was subsidised to that degree!!
