Hi everyone,
Hubby planning to sell his car and wants to buy Van to get converted to 2 bed Campervan. It will have to be compact and not bulky / heavy to use as an everyday drive around town, easy to drive, economical etc. etc. Very important for us is height, much prefer Van with high roof rather than a pop up roof. (He is 6 ft 2") As we live in Ireland the waitlist for new Van is around 5-6 months, so may purchase nearly new in UK. Have looked at Ford, Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, Nissan. just not sure which may be a best buy for us. Feels quite overwhelming starting off with these big decisions so any advice much appreciated. :)

Hi there and a big welcome to the forum.

Before selecting your vehicle are you happy with the various import procedures & costs that are required with a GB-ROI import for a secondhand vehicle.

There may be a different protocol between NI and ROI for importing if the vehicle is already registered in NI; i.e. due to the EU Customs Zone which covers the whole of Ireland.

In theory an import from GB to ROI will add a few thousand Euros to your vehicle final price.

All the best,

Andrew

You need to see what the differing rules are from GB or Northern Ireland as this might prove financially important , :)

The VW Transporter us generally accepted to be a great everyday vehicle as it is slightly narrower and a good drive.
The Peugeot and Fiat bases are liked because they are boxy, not going in at the sides ands are slightly wider and so many people have a transverse bed - not quite wide enough for 6ā€™2ā€ person though
If possible go and see a lot of conversions even if you donā€™t want to buy them, and get a feel for what you want.
Could you hire one, it would really help in your decision making.

Thank you for replying. Yep, have brought 2 cars from GB to Ireland in the past and paid the V.R.T. here. Did it that way to save money and get the top spec second hand cars that just weren't around here when we were looking. (Always limited choice in smaller Ireland!) However, since Brexit, apparently there is an extra 10% tax going to be applied from July 21' onwards so I better hurry!

Thank you for your reply, have done this previously with 2 cars. There's a tool online to give an approximate VRT amount payable but will def get an accurate estimate pre-buying if we go down this route .

I would second the VW transporter. Easily the best driving van.

The ford and Seville vans are ok but not very refined.

VW crafter and MB sprinter are more refined but expensive.

I'd avoid Renault / vauxhall as they have many issues especially the 1.9 and 2.2 engines.

Cheers James
