Please could anyone suggest the best toll free (or as less tolls as possible) from Orleans to Sarlat.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Derry

A20 toll free from 20 miles south of Orleans to south of Brive. Good road and not many lorries use it.

@ Lenny HB do I take the A71/E9 (which I assume is a toll road to Vierzon where I pick up the A20E9 ?

Thanks

Excuse the typos. Looks and Parallel

I agree with @Lenny HB, the D2020 is excellent and there are a number of good aires and campsites along the route.
If you are going round Orleans watch the speed limits as they change often and we have seen the gendarmes with hand held speed cameras just inside the 50kph sections.

Richard.

Many thanks. Lovely quick route down to the Dordogne. Minor mistake at Brive, ended up taking the A89 for a short distance (about 10kms) before heading down the D704 into Sarlat. Off to Tarragona in Spain next week, any suggestions for a toll free reasonable route, as before would be much appreciated.

Have a look at the link in my signature "Lenny's search for winter sun" we carried on from the free section of the A20 into Spain, a good route with some beautiful scenery. We finished near Tarragona. All free, although we used one of the smaller tunnels it's traffic signal controlled now, so effectively one way.
Really liked this route we came back the same way.

@Lenny HB and @Clarky Thanks again both of you. Lenny HB what are the roads like on the route you took to Tarragona. Just had a quick look on Google Maps and its difficult to tell. are there many high passes with massive drops off the side, as I've been led to believe. I have followed your thread as you suggested and apart from the very tight village (sorry cant remember the name) it didn't look to bad.

Roads are fine a few tight bends on the French side leading up to the tunnel but plenty of room and not many lorries on this route. Spainish side very good big run off areas on the hairpins. Some of the Spainish road surfaces a bit rough but it is a really nice route.
The tunnel is one of the higher ones don't rember any big drops off the side.

The tight village was because the satnag decided to take us past the nice wide road to the Aire it thought it would play games with us.:)

Let us know how you get on if you go that way.

If @Lenny HB route is through the Somport Tunnel, suggest you do it in the morning. After lunch you tend to meet the trucks coming down the French side and they can be a bit intimidating. Otherwise an excellent route.

My route uses the Bielsa-Arangnouet tunnel, not many trucks on it. Much nicer than the Somport route.

Thanks for that @Lenny HB Have been looking for a different route for our annual trek to avoid that stupid A10. On our way back this year we routed A20 which was nicer if a bit longer.

Worth the extra miles to avoid the N10/A10 probably not so bad it you are under 3500 but over very painful.
