None of the companies gave me any options to say it's 3rd party when towing ..they just ask is the car modified...you say yes..then if its not on the list its referred to the underwriters...then they put the price up ..double some of them ..

Very few insurance companies will insure a car comprehensive whilst being towed on an A frame and the motorhome insurance won't cover it.
We went to NFU and got it confirmed in writing that the car would be covered comprehensive whilst being A framed.

Even towing the car on a trailer it’s only third party cover I suppose it’s because you are towing it and not driving it?🤔

camping and caravanning since a kid. New to motorhomes
just had renewal quotes for both my cars and both increased a fair amount over last year. So checked a few other companies and they were even more.
Commented to my son about it. He was saying many of his mates have had "canny" increases this year on their cars.

LV can't offer me a policy because the car is not stored at my address but the address of the other named Driver. So much for being honest.

Mine is simply insured as a car. When it's a toad it's a trailer and covered by mh insurance.
I would be very doubtful of that and you need to check with your MH Insurer. Is your A Frame attached to the car via attachments in the crossmember or by chains to the underbody? I know the Toad is classed as a Trailer but you may find you are not covered if you have not declared a modification.

Attached to an additional crossmember and uses electronic braking and breakaway system. I'm unconcerned about Comprehensive cover for it whilst towing so long as the towing vehicle insurance covers Third Party claims involving the trailer.

Well this not good advice on the forum. Firstly the conversion to the A Frame is a modification and should be declared to your car insurer and secondly, in the event of a claim while driving it, it's declared absence may invalid your insurance leaving you to pay the claim personally.

A similar discussion took place on a classic car forum I was involved with so I asked my insurance company what changes they needed to know about. They said any change from standard spec. So I sent them an example list of changes. Because it was an older vehicle the only parts I didn't list were the engine, transmission, and chassis/bodywork. Everything else including brakes, wheels, tyres, suspension, lighting, etc, had been changed from standard. The list was very long. They wrote back to say the only changes of interest were any that materially affected performance and only then if the change was substantial. More generally I believe a claim could be affected only if a change to the vehicle contributed to the accident that resulted in the claim.

I know where you are coming from being involved with Classics myself, but I would rather the Insurer made that decision than just assume it. I have just spent the day trying to get a suitable quote on my Toad (Peugeot 107 prof., converted by Tow-Bars 2 Tow-Cars), after the renewal quote had doubled despite clear record and 1yr NCD added. Like you, I had not declared the conversion as it had been bought blind with the MH last year and at the time of insuring I was not aware of what was involved in the fitting of it. In actual fact we have hardly needed to used it. However, from this Forum it was quite apparent that it was a modification and should be listed with the Insurer. With ringing around it was quite clear that the presence of it had to be referred by the Brokers, to the underwriters in all cases for their instruction. Some would not insure it, others added premium and the one I have accepted has listed it but did not need to increase the premium plus fully Comp when being towed (over 50's Company). What it did show was not all Insurers are happy to cover it and that is where caution is necessary. My documents now list the A Frame, so no argument. What they did ask was, has an MoT been issued since the conversion, answer, Yes. Another thing they have listed/allowed, was that the car could be stored either at my address (the insured), or the other named Drivers address. Again, some would not allow that.

Regards

Richard

Because I have only 1yrs NCD on my 107, Saga quoted £463 with a named driver. I took it because it was at the end of a day ringing round with turn downs or worse price. I'm now furious with Saga because now I've seen the paperwork, it just says modified.

Update, I've just spoken with them and it is fully recorded on their system as an 'A Frame mod', so at least I know now that in the event of a mishap no one can come back and say it was undeclared so no pay out. Obviously as we accrue more NCD we may be in a stronger haggling position. What I will say is all the Brokers had to refer back to the Underwriters who often were not bothered so long as it was declared and importantly passed an MoT converted. They have all confirmed that for some unexplained reason, the Insurance industry has gone mad with renewal premiums skyrocketing. Yes, this puts it more than the MH Insurance, but having the little car makes life for us anyway, so much easier, both being well Retired and cycling not an option.

Thanks for that. Incidentally Adrian Flux came out tops with £256. We are in the same boat as you and have got fed up with being reliant on public transport and taxis so we are having the tow bar installed on a Chausson at Copthorne Services, and the Aygo we pick up tomorrow is in at Kaytow next Tuesday for the A frame. Let us know of any nice sites with lots to do in the vicinity. Regards Nev
