Hi. I’m buying my first motorhome after caravanning for years. It’s a 2012 Travel Van with a 150hp auto engine. I think it may need a new cam belt and is a private sale from a friend. Can anyone advise on the cost and maybe recommend a garage not too far from Ludlow? It’s a bit cold for diy at this time of year. Mileage is 25000 ish.
Thanks.

Mine goes in on 2 feb been quoted £432 all in that's no water pump
I would recommend having the pump changed as on the 250 range it is driven by the cam belt

I will have a word with the garage as I was told on the later x290 the pump was much better

So far I have two quotes for cambelt change inc water pump. One. Is independent garage at £805 and the other is Motus Fiat professional garage in Gloucester at £840. It would be great to have a resource with a list of garages with prices and experience on work done. i was very imprested with the Motus garage in Gloucester. Good price quoted and when we went to collect the vehicle they had updated the price and charged us less than the quote.

Whilst I can’t recommend any one in your area, consider who does these things the most. We now use Hull Van Centre, previously used a Fiat Professional commercial vehicle centre, for our servicing because they are doing vans (Fiat/Ford,Volkswagen,Citroen etc) all day every day and will have much more experience than some motorhome dealers that may well put this kind of job out anyway.

Might need to check the tyres, at just 25000 miles it's been stood around a fair bit.

I've had the job done twice in ten years on my VW T4 based m/h by a local garage where all the family have been taking their vehicles for 30 years. For 'commercial vehicles' they bring in a freelance guy to their workshop who specialises in commercial vehicle cambelt replacement. I can't identify the cost as a). I don't ask, and b). it has always been part of other servicing/replacement work.

Thanks. That’s a good point. It was dealer serviced in the autumn and had four new tyres too. I haven’t been able to check the details of the service yet, hence the cam belt query.

I now have an estimate from a local garage with good reviews for around £300+ using a Gates’ belt.

I’ve just paid £360 including water pump and ancillary belts so you not far out with that quote 👍

Dave Newall in Telford used to be a trade member on here. We travelled down from Glasgow to get ours done (obviously, as part of a trip).
Could be worth a call.

Thanks, that’s handy 👍. I’m enjoying this site, along with park4night at the moment. Good armchair stuff. Amazed at the speed of helpful replies. Thanks everyone.

What is the interval for changing the cambelt? Mine is a 2017 Fiat Ducato which has just clicked over 12,000 miles. Bought privately in October.
Thanks

5 years, Motorhomes unlikely to get to mileage requirement. So unless you've documentation its been done recently time to get it done this year.

Lenny HB Has the belt manufacturer advice been updated recently?
Only what I said previously that my local independant won't use Gates kits any more due to problems and will now only use Fiat kits.
Although the Fiat kit is dearer around £480 making the belt change on my A Class £800 - £1k it's a lot cheaper than a new engine.

I was told on here, that The Fiat Cambelt kit was a Dayco kit with Fiat stamped on the packet, which makes sense as Fiat along with most manufacturers would not be interested in setting up their own cambelt or any other ancillary part factory, inc water pumps & alternators & brake parts. Its just that we feel forced to use Fiat "Genuine" Parts in case there is a problem, especially if under the 2/3 year warranty, after that you are out there in the cold anyway.
Makes sense, especially if you compare both kits and can see no physical differences whatsoever, as indeed the the independent parts specialist did in this case.
Shame Dave Newell is not closer, I would use him when the time came.

Don't know what he uses now but it used to be Gates belts and Graf pumps.

Ours is 2012 x250, a d I had a quote this morning from a fiat dealer at £950.
That was parts and 4 1/2 hours labour.

I am waiting a call back tomorrow from my local guy who did it last time.

Dave Newell quoted a little bit more than Corve Bridge but no courtesy car, just the local museums. Still a Gates belt and not including service belt (ie alternator belt, I think. So local was fine for me.

You may try Priorslee Motor Services in Telford, they did a cambelt & water pump on our VW T6 a few months ago. I supplied genuine parts as done like that the parts carry the VW guarantee when professionally fitted.
Our local independent will now only use genuine Fiats kits for the same reason after they had problems with Gates belts. Puts 2 or 300 quid on the job but cheaper than a new engine.
