Hi, our motorhome is on a 2004 Fiat Ducatto 2.8 TD. Anyone know what the interval is to change the timing belt is? and does the water pump have to be done at the same time? It was last done 4 years ago and our garage has said (not a Fiat specialist) that it now needs doing again, but we had the idea that it was 5 years.
Thanks.

We have our cam belt changed every 4 years. We would rather do this than risk the catastrophic damage to the engine that a snapped belt can do. As far as I can recall, the water pump has not been changed in 8 years. However, we do have a full service done on the van every year, without fail. If there are any problems between services we get those fixed straight away. This all seems to have paid dividends as our 24-year-old 'van has never failed a test in the 8 years that we have owned it.

At 2004 your engine should be a JTD, not a TD.

TD was a mechanical injector pump
JTD is electronic injection.

The pump doesn't have to be changed but the new tensioner will put undue force on the pump and could cause failure meaning in effect the whole job has to be repeated, at the same cost, just to change the pump.
Always worth changing the pump at the same time.

Thank you for your replies. What a shame it did not go on mileage only - would take us many years to reach 120k.
Will get the job done - pump as well to be sure.
:thanks3:

It is whatever comes first. If 120k would take you that long, & remember that is kilometres not miles (75miles), it would snap through old age.

By pure coincidence l asked the same question at an independent garage near home the other day and was very pleased to be told that my Peugeot Boxer is in fact a Ford (??) engine and has a timing chain instead so renewal is less likely.
Very odd?

wiki has the engine info.. Ford Puma on the 2.2 HDI Boxer and Citroën Jumper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Ducato
