I'm completely new to wood butchery. Where the best place to buy finished timber?

BnQ is overpriced on everything so assume timber is the same? I am pretty clueless to be honest. Wood is not my strong point

Google “timber merchants” in Norwich...?? They should cut to size for you too and deliver...

Try a builders' merchant like a Graham's if there is one near you.

Living the dream.
Find your local timber yards and go and have a chat with two or three of them would be my advice.

Don’t buy anything that is stored vertically as if it’s still growing.

Travis do this and it’s s***

OK timber yard not builders yard. No vertical storage.

I needed a bit of 25mm x 25mm "strip wood" for trimming around my windows. Went to BnQ and they were all bent, kinked and sappy. Wasn't impressed.

Agreed re: B&Q.
Overpriced, bent, warped, and twisted.

They do have some 50mm x 75mm x 2.4mtr timber at a good price though.
But I did have to check around 30 lengths to find the 8 lengths that I needed.

Wickes used to be cheap but not anymore which is why it's always empty.
Jewson's nothing has prices on. When you go to the till they think of a number.
B&Q should be called OMG
Thornecliffes near where I live are great. I'm having an 8FT X 4 FT piece of Ply being dropped off tomorrow.
Charlies Stores are pretty good as well.
Motorhome wise Magnum Supplies are meant to be an Aladdin's cave of Motorhome Stuff.

For the amount and purpose you need it for, get kiln dried pressure treated.....

Try planting a tree and then in 50 or so years time you’ll have lots of wood.

If you need it before then, drive round Norwich till you find a skip with it in,then steal it.

More than toes wet now!
If it's going to be visible you'll want PSE (plain square edged) - more commonly known as dressed.
If it'll be behind boarding you'll want it pressure treated but that's generally, OS (off saw - rough). You might struggle to get 25 x 25mm and may have to get it cut down out of wider boards.
ps the actual size of the dressed timber will be around 21 \ 22mm because it'll have been planed out of 25mm.

all the wood in the big barn stores like b&q are still too wet. You need kiln dried, otherwise the timber will shrink and possibly distort after being cut to size and fitted

A proper timber merchants is the answer and only accept first grade kiln dried. They can cut and plane for you, but you will pay a premium. A good diy quality table saw and plane should be on your shopping list too.

then you get onto timber types, most is cheap rubbish softwood with zero structural strength. If the budget allows, use kiln dried ash wood to make any furniture frames, especially the bed. the cheap stuff cracks easily under stress when it dries out

Check around to see if there is a specialist Timber merchant that deals in Hardwood. Some grades are not so dear as you think. If you are going to cover it up with wall board, why not Rough sawn/off saw.

When I needed some small gauge hardwood, couldn't get it anywhere local, didn't trust Couriers to deliver it . Went to an Auction house, bid on an old Mahogany Wardrobe, took it home, took it apart, and cut it to the sizes I needed, any left overs went in the log burner. Win Win!

I can recommend Cushion Hardwood in Norwich, used them a couple of times and they have good stock at reasonable prices in both hard and soft wood.
