Just asking as I have a similar problem, don't think mine is the gears as it sometimes goes all the way in and out and sometime it doesn't. It's free enough if I take the motor link off so have no idea what the prob could be.

If your motor is an Autotrail it could be the polymer EM fuse in causing the problem.
All - thanks for the replies, I assumed it was likely a worn cog (thanks to an episode of Wheeler Dealers!) but didnt expect a replacement to be so difficult to obtain.
What is a polymer EM fuse please?? Wont hurt to look at all possibilities...

Oh dear!Just sorted it, very simple in the end. WD40 to the moveable parts on the non-motorised side and it moves in smoothly now!
Think you would have been better using silicon oil rather than WD40.Just sorted it, very simple in the end. WD40 to the moveable parts on the non-motorised side and it moves in smoothly now!

What's annoying is that I have some silicon spray, oh well!WD40 now also make a silicone spray
He sorted it a year ago.I think the pivots on the steps structure need to be lubricated since they are rusted or dusty.

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but thought id give it a go, I have a similar problem and think its something to do with sargent unit, my step is only extending and retracting an inch or two at a time, now my system is an ec600, would you be familiar with that,Hi
If you have Sargent electronics such as EC400, then there is adjustment built in. This takes the form of Step Motor Count Time, It basically gives a shorter or longer 'on' period for the step to fully deploy or retract.
It is accessed via the Advanced Settings on the ECU.
If anyone does not know how to access the advanced settings, give me a shout.
Thanks for replying, think ive got it sorted, i didn’t realise you had to exit settings for it to apply, thanks again for pointing me in right directionGadget340 I'm not familiar with the Ec600 but it doesn't sound like it would be something in the menu. I would ring Sargent if no one comes back on here. A few years ago it was a poly fuse problem but I have no idea if the Ec600 has one.
