Just asking as I have a similar problem, don't think mine is the gears as it sometimes goes all the way in and out and sometime it doesn't. It's free enough if I take the motor link off so have no idea what the prob could be.

The gears on mine were just not fit for purpose. I believe the new ones are metal gears. Shame they didn't do the right thing and make a retro fit gear set for all the weak ones sold over the years.

Not wishing to hijack this thread but I have an identical step. It is working fine but is dropping (sagging) on the left (motor side) of the unit as if a bearing or something is collapsing. We are travelling at present so I can't really do much with it but would appreciate suggestions as to what may be wrong.

Mine did that and on closer inspection the angle bracket that bolts to the chassis had broken on the front edge, I was lucky as I could get it of and weld it back together again. Have a closer look to make sure.

If your motor is an Autotrail it could be the polymer EM fuse in causing the problem.

All - thanks for the replies, I assumed it was likely a worn cog (thanks to an episode of Wheeler Dealers!) but didnt expect a replacement to be so difficult to obtain.

What is a polymer EM fuse please?? Wont hurt to look at all possibilities...

Hi I have just purchased a 2009 Autotrail Arapaho and found the electric step had been removed so I purchased a new Thule step and the new step wires all matched the existing wires so happy days connected it all up but the step only comes part way out when I unlock the door but then if I keep pressing the interernal switch it goes in inch by inch but if I help it out by hand on unlocking it sometimes comes out but won't always go back in and I can't find the relay anyone any ideas

Hi
If you have Sargent electronics such as EC400, then there is adjustment built in. This takes the form of Step Motor Count Time, It basically gives a shorter or longer 'on' period for the step to fully deploy or retract.
It is accessed via the Advanced Settings on the ECU.
If anyone does not know how to access the advanced settings, give me a shout.

I have just put in resources the guide for replacing the poly fuse that can effect step operation, it's normally only on Sargent EC4xx and EC500 units between 2010-2011

Just having a look at the step as it isn't retracting fully.

Trying to take the cover off and have removed nut but there seems to be some sort of connection to bottom corner that I can't see how to release! Any suggestions?

May be able to see extra fasteners if you remove the front cover. I seem to remember a countersunk screw.

Looks like there is a fixing bottom right in the photo covered with a protective grommet type thing.

Mine wasn’t retracting on ignition and took it apart and found a poor earth connection

Just sorted it, very simple in the end. WD40 to the moveable parts on the non-motorised side and it moves in smoothly now!

I think the pivots on the steps structure need to be lubricated since they are rusted or dusty.

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but thought id give it a go, I have a similar problem and think its something to do with sargent unit, my step is only extending and retracting an inch or two at a time, now my system is an ec600, would you be familiar with that,

Gadget340 I'm not familiar with the Ec600 but it doesn't sound like it would be something in the menu. I would ring Sargent if no one comes back on here. A few years ago it was a poly fuse problem but I have no idea if the Ec600 has one.

Thanks for replying, think ive got it sorted, i didn’t realise you had to exit settings for it to apply, thanks again for pointing me in right direction 👍🏻
