Damn thing has suddenly stopped working. Are these fixable "in the field"? Or should we continue to climb in and out like HGV drivers? I can try unbolting everything and taking a look inside. Does anyone know whether that will just result in parts flying in all directions when I open it up, or is there some chance of me being able to diagnose the problem at least, even if I can't fix it. I can give a detailed description of the problem, but I just wanted an indication of whether these are best left to the professionals.

I have recently replaced mine, when you say it has stopped working is that a power issue, maybe the switch or fuse. or is it more serious and the motor on the step has packed up

The motor operates on the switch, but step won't extend or retract. I can pull it out and push it back manually.

I've just repaired my double step after it stopped working in Italy.
I bought a folding step from a chinky hardware store to use whilst away, not ideal but it worked.
It was the gear that broke on mine and easily replaced once I got it off the motorhome.
Is yours completely dead ? Could be electrical, fuse maybe.
Edit, sounds like yours maybe gear drive related. I'd get it fixed once home.

The mechanism is just a wiper motor and a link to push the step in and out. Mine had stripped the plastic gears so a new one from fleabay sorted it out. It's easy enough to remove the step assembly just four nuts and bolts on mine and the lecky was a plug. My motor was a Bosch Part No 0390203266.

If it does turn out to be the motor or gearing stripped in the motor gearbox as was mine then this is the Bosch headlight adjuster motor I bought that the Thule steps use.
This is the cheapest one that I found at the time I repaired ours.
You can buy a Thule one for 4 or 5 times the price if you want but you're buying the exact same motor.

Sounds like the shaft has gone. Which happened to mine whilst in Portugal.
Relatively easy fix, shaft is about £30+ and comes with full instructions.
