Have read about renewing the thermal paste on the aluminium plate so decided to treat Mr S to a tube. He seems to think he just tops up along the element, but I thought it would be a good idea to slather it all over the back of the aluminium plate as well. Is that a good idea or not?

It's a conductive paste so needs slathering.
Would probably be best to clean all the old paste off first as well and start fresh.

If it's anything like seating a CPU in a computer then you need to put a dollup in the middle and then apply the heatsink and allow the goop to spread itself out. That way you don't trap any air pockets like you do if you slather first as trapping air pockets (not having a consistent layer) will reduce it's efficiency.

Never thought of that...... But slathering will still be better than spreading a bead around the edge without removing.
