I wonder when Doctors and Dentists will stop selling the "good name" of their industry to companies like Cigarette makers.

I wonder when dentists will get a cameraman who isn't pissed and can hold a camera straight.

There were some bold claims before the Advertisers Standards Authority. I remember this one. It Looks good, Tastes Good and By Golly it does you Good and I still believe every word of it '\

I wonder how long it will be before “they” decide that those silly vape devices for smokers are also detrimental to health?

I think they have already?

It’s called pop something or other I think and affects the lungs?

Only one of my rellies who were smokers made it past age 60.

I inherited their fancy silver cigarette cases, and a perspex cigarette box inscribed with the GEC logo. Very modern, probably a promotional gift from GEC to my dad who was in the power generation business and a likely customer. Back in the 1950s and 1960s if you didn't smoke you were a bit suspect.

On a slight tangent, I remember the campaign that claimed "Guinness Gives you Power" (nudge nudge, wink wink). Nowadays there's a small blue pill for that.

This will do you good!

What I am amazed at is that none of those who used to work for W.D & H.O Wills in the offices have paut a claim in as they used to give there staff a carton of fags with the monthly pay check.

That's how I started! Sister used to work for them but didn't smoke & stacked them up on the mantle piece .I used to help myself:rofl:

Some years ago I was apologising in the doctors due to the fact that I smoked . He looked at me a bit funny & replied "& ?, so do I "
He still does.I don't(y)

You dont think its your posts that make him look at you funny, do you?;)

Many year ago Doctors suggested you take up smoking to toughen up your lungs

Popcorn lung? There's also COPD.
You don't have to have smoked to get COPD.. I can assure you . I have never smoked but was diagnosed with it in 2010.. Passive smoking is the cause of mine I believe due to working in an office where all my girls smoked and also the pubs etc.

Plus being a child and having parents and relatives that smoked like chimneys in the house or confined spaces like cars and motor homes .

Reading the above adverts about keeping slim by smoking.. I wondered if there was any relationship between the rise in obesity and smoking .. ie.. obesity numbers increasing due to smoking cessation ?

a quick google came up with these two reports which supports that to a degree.. but there are many other factors.. and a complex subject, but makes interesting reading ..

Relationship between Smoking and Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Study of 499,504 Middle-Aged Adults in the UK General Population

and here

The effect of tobacco cessation on weight gain, obesity and diabetes risk

Study Importance
  • Tobacco cessation is an important public health priority, yet many smokers gain weight after quitting, in some cases offsetting some of the health benefits of quitting.
  • Smoking is a risk factor for diabetes, but cessation could interfere with glucose control for some.
  • Some interventions that combine tobacco cessation and weight control have proven effective in helping smokers quit without excess weight gain.
  • Previous reviews of this area have not focused on the integration of neurobiological, behavioral and health services research and none have included intervention effects on diabetes.
  • Integration of tobacco cessation, weight management and diabetes prevention and management may be a new direction for health care.
