There's been so much fuss and moaning about celebs and politicians using planes on here lately, so I did a bit of research, rather than quote sources from the tabloids...

I was surprised that a jet plane uses only about 1mpg. That amazed me.

Then I found this...

One way to calculate CO2 emissions is from fuel consumption per flight.

A Boeing 737-400 jet is typically used for short international flights.

For a distance of 926 km, the amount of fuel used is estimated to be 3.61 tonnes [38], including taxiing, take-off, cruising and landing.

Using a seating capacity of 164 [Wikipedia, viewed 28.2.08] and an average seat occupancy (or 'load factor') of 65% [14], this gives a fuel use of 36.6 g per passenger km.

CO2 emissions from aviation fuel are 3.15 grams per gram of fuel [38], which gives CO2emissions from a Boeing 737-400 of 115 g per passenger km.

A transit van kicks out 167 grams per mile.

So a fully laden Transit camper kicks out more pollution than a jet plane, per mile.

That's very interesting

Folk should stop reading the sh!te in the press

Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) released Aviation Benefits Beyond Borders, a detailed report on the aviation industry, in April 2014. The report shows that there are 37.4 million flights scheduled in 2014! That is up 2.7% from 2013. And it means an average of 102,465 flights per day.

And one nice lady flew home from a holiday a day early and the world explodes.

The problem there is you quoted plane emissions in KM and Transit emissions in miles.
If you show the emissions in miles for both, the plane emissions work at at around 184g per mile, and assuming most motorhomes will have at least 2 passengers, the statistics show that the transit is far less polluting at around 84g per mile per person as opposed to the planes 184 g per person per mile.

The maths were done after a few glasses of rum so might not be fully correct.

But I agree that Ms Thomson’s trip home was irrelevant, she was going home anyway.

I'm glad it wasnt just me @Allanm

But if these figures are correct then a fiat twinair with one occupant is exactly the same as a 65% full jet so we might as well carry on driving everywhere.

Ok thats a slightly facetious argument but anybody who has been to India or Asia will realise that there isnt much point in us killing our car industry for the environment when these guys do nothing. Anyone see the F1 in Shanghai last week? it wasnt cloudy.

Doesn’t the distances involved come into the equation? I have just had a 2 week motorhome holiday in the UK with my wife and covered about 1,000 miles. A holiday in Florida is, I believe, about 4,000 miles each way. I know both holidays cause some environmental damage but I think my motorhome is not the worst offender on the planet.

Quite ;)

To come back from the USA means that she went there.....

I believe she makes this trip many many times.....

Also, take into account that many holiday flights are long haul and may be many thousands of miles whereas a motorhome trip will usually be much shorter.
Plus, we park in a field or gravel pitch, use very little water, get most of our electricity from the sun and walk/ cycle when we are at our destinations. Once there we use very little of earths resources.
People flying on holiday will usually stay in huge concrete hotels, using copious quantities of water in their luxury bathrooms, plus the laundry with bedding/ towels etc being changed daily.
They will also use road transport too and from the airports at both ends.
I know which form of holiday is the most environmentally friendly.

Both forms of travel cause pollution, but cutting back on co2 emissions isn’t all we can do. I understand there are some countries that don’t seem to care ( USA being one if the main offenders with a president who doesn’t want to admit their part in it) but if we all cut back a little, recycle more and think how our actions affect the environment, then we will make a difference.
Thinking “I won’t do it because others don’t care” really isn’t the way to go.

As an example, the fact that some people still throw litter out of car windows when they drive along, doesn’t mean we should all do it.

Have a look at the emissions figures for shipping
and then all the trans shipping , delivery that goes on now .
Its self sorting in the long run , if you buy into the manmade thing as we will destroy ourselves as overpopulation of parasites tend to have that end result , so sad !

I’m just not a hypocrite.....

I don't go preaching to the masses about stopping something then go and do the opposite and probably 5 times more then the average person....

She should be a politician....
I didn't see her preaching. Did you?

The biggest problem of it all is..........................us.

There are just too many of us.
Cut the huge population growth and the problem decreases.
Of course our lily livered politicians don't like to talk about that in case it offends some people.

Richard.

There are not too many of us, there are far too many of us and increasing exponentially. The lowest estimate, barring nature intervening, is 14 billion (American).

In how many years ?

Like Al Gore. The failed candidate for US President and environmentalist - remember "An Inconvenient Truth". Google how much electricity his mansion uses.

Think of all the scientists flying round the globe to attend Climate Change conferences.

Motorhomers are way down the list of environmental offenders. Our fuel is highly taxed at the pumps, unlike aviation fuel, still exempt from any carbon tax. We are effectively taking the hit instead of the LoCo airlines who keep whingeing about high oil prices.

It seems that if something or someone is polluting more than you, then your pollution is ok and doesn't exist. Carry on .

I do all that is reasonable to keep my footprint to a minimum,
however, I won’t tell everyone else that they should do less...

14 billion Americans........... oh dear
