After meeting with bobandjane we've decided to try the Mosel this July/August.
We only have 2 weeks and would like any advice you can offer from experience.

Have never done it in July/August but we did the Rhine on fire last September and will be doing it again this year. We started at Binden and worked up to Koblenz, then down the Mosel and across to Luxembourg. There are stellplats every few kilometres, so no need for campsites. The only downside I can see would be that the time you are thinking of going will be very busy, as its a very popular area.

Just about non of the above from memory. It's a main road in a river valley. Simples. It's a short road from Tier too.

Head for Belgium, Luxembourg, fill up, head for Tier, do it. Enjoy.

It's worth turning down the Rhine in Koblenz and visiting Boppard and Sankt Goar.

Take plenty of cash especially if buying wine from a local producer. Cards are not as widely used as in Italy,France etc.
There's a baker who comes to the stellplatz in Ediger Eller who has the best bread and cakes according to my hubby. Passes at 8.30am.
Enjoy it's lovely

Used to take coaches out to this area a lot and quickest route is as follows - all non-toll motorways. Used to do this in under 6hrs driving time at coach speeds.

From Calais (or Dunkerque, same route) A16/E40 then A18/E40 to Ostende, Brugges, Brussels.
Take Brussels Ring clockwise R22 leaving Ring at A3/E40, always following signs for Liege.
In about 12km take A2/E314 Louvain then stay on E314 following Aachen.
At German Border road becomes A4/E40 to Koln - after Aachen there is a decent service area - go straight through lorry park to other end.
Before reaching Koln, take A61 to Koblenz - care here, keep right all the time.
Past the Koblenz turns cross a VERY high viaduct then take J39 down a long steep hill until you meet the Mosel. Turn left under the bridge then

SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY.

When we did it, as advised by others..

Left at Calais, up into Belgium using free motorways via Namur and Luxembourg (fill cheap fuel) then onto trier?? I recall we easily did it within the day.
We went from Trier up to koblenz.
Trier has a big aire (plus some wild camp near Mcdonalds) you can do a search on YouTube to view it.... In the town is a tourist office near the roman gate and you can pick up a map of the river in English for a few euros..
loads of Stellplazts, fantastic views... defiantly worth the visit, we will do it again..

Arrive at aires in the day as they can get busy and fill up quick.....

Great biking area, even wife had a ride out and that's very unusual...

We stayed on a small camp site at Sankt Goar, right at side of the Rhine, with EHU, small marina, very picturesque watching the barges go up & down river, nice small town:thumb:

While you are there both on the Rhine and the Mosel leave the camper behind and use the water buses - if you can pick one doing commentary in English then you will get an insight into the myths mysteries and legends of the area and do visit Bernkastel some of the back street wine bars are cheap for a bottle and 2 glasses for some very nice wines. Its an old world village and the castle is well worth a visit

Try the camp site at the Deutsches Eck opposite Koblenz at the Rhine Mosel confluence. The site is expensive and at your time of year probably needs booking, but what a location and Koblenz is certainly worth a visit.

As you are a technical sort of bloke you may find an evening sitting watching the mighty Rhine barges passing fascinating for an hour or two, of course you can do that from any Rhine riverside Stellplatz or camp site.

Did Trier to Koblenz last Sept. Great place to be, plenty of Stellplatz ( aires), and very camping car friendly area. All the way great towns and villages. Could be busy July/Sept though.

Don't miss a wine festival. There's one in July at Traben-Trarbach. Loads of Stelpltze, every town/village has one. Enjoy.

Do we need an Umwelt sticker for the Moselle? - we are thinking of going the end of July but are wondering if a) if we need an Umwelt sticker and b) Non acceptance of UK Credit cards, if it is going to be worth the hassle......

This time next week I'll be heading for Dover :)

Where I can't get wifi I'll be using my Orange roaming at £3 per 100mb per day.
I hope to add a good few new galleries

If you hit Brussels during rush hour it's extremely busy. I went toll free via Lille, congestion is not an issue but pot holes is. Not a problem during the day as you can see them. Belgium is road poor, however they are now undertaking significant road repairs. In spite of this, still my preferred route.

Just done 4 weeks over there including 2 trips into the Moselle Valley. Make sure that you stop at Zell as there is a huge Globus hypermarket on top of the hill near the hospital. Locals travel to this to shop from throughout the Moselle valley. Go into the store and ask at customer services for a token for the shopping trolley. The car park has a row of large parking places for Motorhomes.

There is a Stellplatz at the bottom of the hill close to one of the bridges crossing the river at 50.016410, 7.175735

View media item 11676
Globus car park is at 50.027454, 7.157289

At Trier we stopped at the Von Nell Stellplatz - see pic attached - this is a family run vineyard, restaurant, trout farm and wine cellars. We ate in the restaurant and walked into town though if we did it again we would ride our bikes.

I will put some more pics of the valley up in the gallery

We went via Bruges and Aachen and spent a day in each and both were well worthwhile visits. We also visited Cologne and that is where the Lindt Chocolate museum is which was a great morning's visit. The bridge with all the lovelocks is a site to see. Cologne Cathedral is magnificent especially the stained glass from inside.

Diesel was €1.204 in Luxembourg everywhere even in motorway service stations. Otherwise the cheapest we could get was €1.3299. Regularly saw diesel at over €1.44 so top up whenever you see it cheap.

Get plenty of €2.0, €1.0, €0.50 and €0.20 coins which are what the machines on Stellplatz's take for water and emptying cassettes. Lot's of variety in their equipment and sometimes frustrating as sometimes the cassette waste goes the same way as the grey water and sometimes not!

Some toilets are "manned" so ladies should have some €0.50 coins always available in their pockets or purses.

Brilliant outdoor swimming pool with diving boards and grass to sunbathe on - take a picnic - at Remich in Luxembourg 49.540325, 6.364151 with a Stellplatz just down the road overlooking the river Mosel at a Marina with both a campsite and a Stellplatz at 49.508347, 6.365355

Do many Stellplatz have EHU you can just connect to rather than bourne type? (Our temporary Fridge will only run statically on mains inside the van and dont want to have to meter feed during the night) so looking at Campsites but want to try the Stellplatz if possible.

I only came across 2 in 4 weeks where we had to meter feed and one of those was the one at Zell and can't remember the other at present. Not necessary to pay the extra for campsites which all seemed to be heaving with caravans and very few MH's!

We had planned to spend Sepetember in the UK but just thinking about booking sites etc I am loosing the will to live ..... What will the weather be like in the Mosel valley in September and will it still be really busy ? We abandoned our cycling trip there in May because of cold and rainy weather . Instead we headed to Northern Italy and worked our way slowly back cycling by rivers Drau , Danube and Rhein and in the end briefly on the Mosel but heading home before the school holidays in Europe kicked in .
