This morning we headed off to a place on Park4Night to park for the morning so we could go out on the bikes.

Our first stop was to empty the loo just in case we didn't find anywhere else in the next day or so. The area was next to these windmills, of which there are hundreds on the island (I wonder why?), which was also an area of an ancient burial barrow.

At our parking area for the ride we were lucky to be able to speak to the guy who was looking after all the facilities and replenishing the information leaflet dispensers. He gave us some good info about where to ride, but we went our own route in the end .

Why do all Swedish under the age of, say mid 40's all speak with Ahmericaan accents???

Our ride took us across the Alvaret. These are plains existing due to the farming of animals and are similar, in normal times, to heathland in the UK, with marshes and small lakes.

In this "not normal" time everything is tinder dry.

The track normally goes between shallow lakes.

IMG_20180817_150947.jpg

Our leaflet said it looks like this!!!

There was a green tunnel as we entered the forest. The Silver Birch trees seem to be affected badly, more so than other trees.
IMG_20180817_144238.jpg

The sea is still there ... but there is a bad smell from dead algae due to the hot summer. We didn't linger ...

Beautiful
Anything to report of the Fishing front ?

NADA!!!

At our present spot which I'll write about soon, our Swedish neighbour said the fishing is sh1t. The seals are eating everything.

A good excuse, I suppose

A few photos from last night's stop then moving on to today's bike ride.

We'd researched a mountain bike area at a village some 30km away. Never knowing what terrain were going to find ourselves in, both driving the van and riding the bikes, we had a pleasant drive (all on tarmac) to a small hamlet just outside the village of Blomstermäla where there was a good parking area and map boards for both biking and walking (even orienteering!!!)

We had a good ride, couldn't do every part of it when it got too rough and rocky, but that was only a tiny percentage of the whole route and when the red route was joined by a black route. The standard went up to black!!!

This part was the red route proper.

And you can see why there's a high fire risk
This is Sweden!!! Funnily enough the barbecue ban was lifted at 12 noon today o_O.

Yea. The seals have eaten it all... everybody knows that..... didn't you know that Robert..well everybody here knows it....but us Real Fishermen have to continue to go through the actions of casting and reeling for the time when the fish return....keeping the arms supple the wrists strong and the reactions sharp.....but we all know that, don't we Robert..we just need to ready, prepared and when the time comes, spring into action like there hasn't been a lull....Like a soldier reservist, armed and ready....but we all know that Robert. Don't we......well don't we all.

Mrs C says that she will give you some fishing lessons when she sees you next time, if you wish.

Last time she went fishing she caught an 8ft shark, with just a hand line.

After two bike rides we'd used quite a bit of battery power (the bikes as well) so we decided to go to a small marina at Bläsinge Hamn and pay the enormous price of SK120 for a spot with leccy. We also quite fancied a nice shower as well .

We got the last marked spot but no leccy point. Not much use to us then but our Swedish neighbour was soon out of his van and offering to let us piggyback off his supply.

This is the very same neighbour who is "an old fisherman" who doesn't like seals. He's also taller than Martin!!! Why he said that he only knows .

Bike batteries are almost recharged. We have done them via solar before but don't want to push our luck too often.

It's very windy and between that and the waves crashing, it's very noisy. A glass of red will help tonight's sleep, I hope.

The Old 8ft Shark story....heard it so many times...hand line....who uses hand lines anyway....Shark...what use are they, dont have an 8ft pan....do you? Did you eat it?
Give me a Seabass, Seatrout or Salmon that's my catch....quite fancy a bit of Seal also....loads near here so the locals tell me...full of protein....fish protein.

Look like sloes. There are some near us the same colour. They are normally much later in the year around here but I guess the weather has brought them on early.

Sloes!!! You sure?

I'll be picking some if so. If they'll last until I can get some gin at a reasonable price, probably in Germany.

Not made the crumble yet. Martin's had to eat up some I bought first.

Maybe tomorrow (y).

I took these photos half an hour ago while walking Charlie. These are definitely sloes. :) You could try tasting yours - they should be very bitter! The ones in the photos are much smaller than they should be but I guess that is down to the lack of rain.
I think you could put some in a Tupperware in the fridge and they should last until you can reach somewhere with cheaper gin. :)

Thanks. I'll definitely be picking some. I've done a bit of googling and it appears they'll improve if kept in the cold for a while :D.

Just been out to watch the sunset. Got there a bit late but watched some birds beginning to murmurate. They disappeared over towards the trees unfortunately.

That's a very nice photo. :) (Five minutes too late possibly... )

And I agree freezing would be good, it will break down the cells - if you have space in the freezer of course.

Our intention of finding somewhere quiet and out of the way for tonight changed when we pulled into the marina at Böda to use the services. There were spaces, although not front line :( and a 50km marked bike route around the top of the island was possible. Also the opportunity for fishing tonight may have been a draw for someone? :D

We cycled through forests on nice trails to the northern lighthouse of Långe Eric.

IMG_20180818_131614.jpg

And surrounding areas.

IMG_20180818_153332.jpg

IMG_20180818_153351.jpg

There was a sign allowing the rock pile building, to keep it in one place, I assume.

We then headed south along the coast where the first four parking areas had motorhomes prohibited signs and the next ones were only daytime parking!!! The problem is everywhere it seems.

Another Viking burial site.

We continued past one of our earmarked tourist sites without noticing it!!! Skäftekärr an old low building with a thatched roof. Another time maybe.

Not picked any Sloes yet. There don't seem to be many here but will definitely be on the lookout tomorrow. What we do have here are wasps!!! Lots of them, especially whilst we were cooking. They're definitely not good for anything.

A grey day today with spits of rain so we've just done a 4.5 km stroll in the nature reserve of Trollskogen, a pine and oak forest at the end of the island on a narrow spit. It has been used for grazing animals over the years and there are black cattle there today.

IMG_20180819_115212.jpg

The largest oak Trolleken is also one of the oldest here.

IMG_20180819_114655.jpg

And some of the trees are very weathered!!!

IMG_20180819_104057.jpg

The area was also used for burials and the 15 or so stone cairns have never been excavated.

In the 15th century the nearest village, now called Grankullaviken was a major naval base and traces of trenches are still visible, although you wouldn't know what they were unless you were told!

IMG_20180819_105033.jpg

On the east coast there is a wreck of a schooner, Swiks, which ran aground in a storm in 1926.

On our way out of the forest we passed an old cabin. These were used by the workers and were set on rails so they could be moved from place to place. However in 1955 it was decided that the workers needed better, more up to date trailers, so they were scrapped. Some have been saved to be used as information points.

IMG_20180819_112023.jpg

And a rather misty view through the window in the (locked) door.

IMG_20180819_111949.jpg

We were chased south cos it was very windy and are now at the parking area for a Castle/Chateau/Schloss or even slott!

Borgholm slott, a ruined castle, info taken from Wikipedia.

Borgholm Castle (Swedish: Borgholms slott) in Borgholm, Sweden, is today only a ruin of the fortress that was first built in the second half of the 13th century and rebuilt many times in later centuries.[1] It is linked to Halltorp estate, to the south. The castle was destroyed in a fire on 14 October 1806.

IMG_20180819_143421.jpg

There is also another place to visit here but we didn't know we'd have to pay (not something that's normal here) so we wandered down without any money . Instead we walked to the sea through a mozzie invested forest :(
but were rewarded with this view.

IMG_20180819_160934.jpg

Returning back to the parking we heard ...... spot the woodpecker :LOL::LOL:

Had a quiet night, just us and a Swedish motorhome parked for the night, but woke to rain. We've now left Öland and are having a cuppa at a small place near Karlskrona, a village called Kristianopel.

The village had had an interesting past and was once part of Denmark.

IMG_20180820_102116.jpg

It's sleepy city now though, cos it's the end of the season here. There is a campsite and a special off season price of SEK250 :( or free parking near the cannon (y).

We're not staying here though, too early to stop.

We've continued southwards, hugging the coast (the slogan of a fellow Funster!) and stopped at a nature reserve next to a military area. We tried to read the signs but we think we were well and truly in the oob area when we headed straight for a bird hide (we knew there was one in the reserve) but not the "hide" we entered. It had gun emplacements instead of bino rests. However, we are still here to post so we were obviously not spotted . Just hope they're not the elite squad cos they just failed!!!

Back on "safe" ground.

But instead we're parking here.
IMG_20180820_172827.jpg

The first spot is normally SEK100 but the coffee shop where you pay is closed now (end of season) so we were told we could just park.

BUT ... it has got very windy and we were in full force so we've moved to the second place where we are a little more sheltered.

Martin's still hoping to get out fishing later

We're on the ferry to Germany (Rugen) on Thursday, got the wrist bands ready if it's still windy .
