Just come back from France with some friends on motorbikes. Fuel prices are very high (as some on this site will know). It has hit the headlines for a few days now.

I don't often agree with the French way of revolting but I do think we should do the same over here right now. Ever increasing fuel prices again!

Just did a Google search and could find next to nothing about it and it would appear that this was maybe fake news as it was reported to have been posted on that ultra reliable source of information facebook and then disapeared.

It was on the French TV news yesterday. Growing anger about fuel has sparked the idea of this protest

I’m surprised they haven’t revolted before the fuel prices were high in the summer. The stealth tax on fuel is never going to be a popular one .
Viva la France I say!!!

Didn't come from Facefarce have known of this for a while comes from other sources from ex pats websites the thing is the organisers seem to be keeping the info scarce hope it doesn't happen or at least very patchy but it seems to be the farmers who are mobilising

A Woosh bang
Sentiment is growing across France against the rise in petrol prices this year, with campaigners seeking to protest on November 17, and a petition on the issue gathering over 300,000 names.

A group on social networking site Facebook has also been set up to call for a protest in Paris on November 17. So far, the plan is to block the capital’s périphérique (ring road).

Over 228,000 people have said they are interested in taking part, and not only in Paris.

Ms Ludosky, who is not organising the protest but has since become involved, said: “At the beginning, this idea was confined to Paris, but now, all across France, people are ready to act.”

Good idea protesting on a Saturday, the downside possibly being fewer police standing watching and not doing anything.

Have made a diary note to stay at home on that day.

You’ve got a big long range tank Mel, you’ll be fine....(y)
Not worried about filling up, we've got a full 10L container which will be having a holiday with us anyway, its more the hassle of blocked roads etc.

Now if those figures were for the UK you could be sure 228 would turn up.....
The general public seem too afraid to do anything like this or feel it has nothing to do with them in this country.

I'm normally very much opposed to the way the french vent there anger by causing disruption, but I have to say on this occasion I'm behind them. The government have slowly been increasing the prices each month thinking people wont see what's going on. Time to get the guillotine out and sort out some of these politicians. France is already one of the worlds highest taxed countries and the only people benefiting seems to be the politicians. Francois Hollande gets a pension of 180,000€ a year for doing nothing whilst he was PM. Originally he was going to get 35,700€ a month but it was reduced. Jaques Chirac gets 31000€ a month pension. Everyone else gets stuffed here.

Couldn't agree more & many other countries have the same problem & the politicians need the same treatment.

I absolutely 100% disagree with every word. Politicians earn a fraction of what is paid by second rate businesses. You want the best people to enter politics but are not willing to reward them. I realise that I am in the minority but am very happy to see good pensions paid to public servants (and by the way, mu pension is crap!. I am not one of them).

As far as your comment that 'Everyone else gets stuffed here', that is nonsense. The general population in France receive excellent benefits and France has about the best health care provisions in the world. It is easy to whine about other peoples pay.

Good luck to them (I await the death threats)

We do a VERY high mileage every year here in France so fuel prices hit us hard but taxes (sadly) need to be paid. If you cut the tax on fuel what else to you raise to make up the difference? Or if you prefer what services do you cut in order to pay for the tax cuts?

Not easy choices.

Yes there is a good health services in France but you have to pay for it. We live in France and it costs my wife and I 134€ a month. Immigrants and people on benefits don't pay for treatment. If you own a property of any sort the government takes back the money. Any benefit payments made to a person who owns a property is also claimed back from your estate. Unemployment benefits are only paid for one year. Then they are stopped. If the benefits are so good why do you think everyone one wants to go to the UK. The present tax system in France reminds me of the UK back in the 60's under the Harold Wilson regime .

If you work for the French public services then you are on a good thing. A train driver can retire at 52 on a full pension which amounts to almost eight tenths of his salary. Plus other benefits like free rail travel for him and his family. They also get other benefits like subsidized housing A lot of train drivers own properties in the Alps which they rent out Other public services are very similar. The country can't afford to pay out these pensions/benefits. If own your own business you don't get anywhere near the above amounts as you have to pay for the above. When EU payouts were plentiful for France everyone jumped on the bandwagon and they gave money away. Now when France has to start paying back to help other EU countries the country can't afford it. I could go on but I can't be bothered.

You get what you pay for. We run a restaurant in Axat in the Aude and the taxes are high but the general services are excellent. The train driver thing is an exception although I have never heard of 'houses in the Alps'. Civil service pensions are high in general but I say good luck to them.

An example of the phrase, you get what you pay for.
Please note that this is not private but rather the national health service in operation.

My wife needs a hip operation.
1. Saw the Doctor the same day she called for an appointment.
2. Saw the specialist in Perpignan 4 days later.
3. Had a full session of tests at the hospital the following week AND saw the specialist 20 minutes after the session finished.
4. Has been told that there is a 3 week delay for the operation (and they apologised for the delay!).
5. She can pick to have the operation on any specific day and even pick the morning or afternoon of that day!.
6. She will have a single room with TV etc.
7. When she returns home a home help could have been supplied but we don't need one and have refused it.
8. She will have a physiotherapist visit twice a day for the first week and once a day for up to two months afterwards.

We have never needed to use the French health service before but now we need it the service is superb.

I don't mind paying for what I get. All funded by my taxes.

You get what you pay for.

I don't mind paying for the service. But it's not only train drivers that get these pensions. It's all government workers. Even the guys working on the roads. I wouldn't mind if the system is fair. We run a business. I have just received a pensions contribution Bill of thirty one thousand euros. When we retier we will get a basic pension of around 400€ a month. And we will have to work till we are 65. This is my gripe.

On the 17th do not try and drive anywhere in France, even the smaller "N" and "D" routes will be seriously effected, if all the major roads are blocked the minor ones will be a nightmare. Find a parking, rise late, lunch around 1300h with a bottle of wine, take an afternoon stroll, a siesta, late dinner with another bottle of wine and restart your journey on the 18th. Less stress and you'll have sampled a little of the French weekend lifestyle. Drive carefully

If you have just received a bill for 31.000 € then I understand your frustration but is that down to not paying previously? I am sorry however. That must have been a bit if a shock to say the least.
