Used to have one of these ... my daughter’s dog who lived with us for 12 years... an exercise in “think very carefully before saying yes to your daughter owning a cute ball of fluff’n’fur just before she leaves home”. Beautiful dog, but after Mr Evans died, Kinu felt it his duty to protect me (a lot) from just about everything which was tedious and potentially scary. If we get another dog it will definitely be a downsizing ???

Sus3v Wow what breed is he? He looks one powerful beastie!
He was aJapanese Akita.
I’m guessing that’ll s all you want to know, but no - I will tell the story ?
Super looking dog, although I was not really a fan of ‘powerful guard dog type breeds’ Nancy was smitten. We knew his parents! Who were well behaved well trained and so was Kinu until my husband died - then he was protective of me against other dogs and people he considered to be dodgy. He would closely sit in front of visitors he didn’t like, lean forward a bit and stare at them (a bit intimidating) but he was fine with the family. He never actually attacked anybody, but would go for most other dogs (nightmares). He weighed just over 7 stone so I took to walking him in the dead of night and at around 5am! He went everywhere with me. In the end he got some sort of Leukaemia /cancer type thing which is a byproduct of the Hiroshima bomb. Sad,as always, but a blessed relief. The end ??

Thanks for that. I once saw a true film about a very loyal Akita, (I forget his name), he continued his routine of going to the station to meet his master's train for years after the man died.
A statue was erected in the dog's memory.
I knew of one a few years ago in the village near where I lived, he too was a magnificent dog but alas he belonged to an irresponsible alcoholic owner who thought it was fun to torment the village dogs with him.
Needless to say the Akita became very dog aggressive and unpredictable. A great shame!
It sounds as if you did all you possibly could to keep your big lad on the straight and narrow.
I imagine as pups they would be irresistible, but it only proves how necessary it is to learn as much as one can about the breed characteristics before undertaking ownership.
Thank you for sharing your story and taking such good care of Kinu to the end of his days.

Absolutely! The film dog was Hachi Ko.
I am a spaniel sort of a girl really! But see how I was duped. No excuses - I should have known better; will know next time (a theme in my life - lol)

Your higher power obviously thought you needed more of a challenge , and you rose to meet it and surpassed it!
Thats right, that was the film.
I think most of us can say "I should have known better" on very many occasions but we all learn so much better from experience lol, and some of us not even then !
As an example I am 71 and have had dogs since I was 4.
I already have a 'high drive ' rescue Border Collie and have recently taken on a Spanish Mastin (Mastiff).
When the opportunity first arose I said "No I have more than enough on my hands", next I thought, can I outlive this new puppy? Then my voice was saying "Yes, I'll have her".
I don't believe in coincidence, these things are meant to happen .
Kinu came to you for a reason and you did him proud  (y)

PS his eyes are amazing, there is such deep feeling there.
I too have had dogs since before I can remember. Some gifts, some waifs or strays. The dog was my husband’s constant companion during his illness. He would let the nurses in, but not strangers. If I was at work,we would get the dog walker in to ‘introduce’ a new nurse. He was an intelligent dog. Apparently akitas were used to look after the babies when the family worked the fields (not just fighters then). The night mr evans died, the dog would not get off the bed or leave him! He was a good dog really.

Here's an update on Querida she was 3 months old on Tuesday. She has outgrown her travelling box (as expected),so borrowed her friend Lass's harness to travel in the back of the car for her visit to the vet for her 2nd lot of injections . She sat in the corner and didn't utter a squeak! Once there she greeted everyone with much wriggling and wagging before flopping down on the lovely cool tiles for a lengthy wait.
When it was her turn, she was reluctant to go with the vet to be weighed but when I tagged along, that was OK. She wasn't at all sure about sitting on the wobbly platform of the weighing scales and didn't understand the Spanish for "now sit still",but when told to "wait" happily complied. In the last month she has doubled her weight and is now just over 17 kgs. The vet expects her to have doubled her weight again by her next visit in 3 months time.
After being weighed Querida dubiously accepted a proffered worming pill and chewed it carefully and thoroughly before eventually swallowing it (I wish she had the same attitude to her regular meals, which she wolfs down at great speed before getting hiccups). She was unaware of receiving the various injections as she played with the treat the vet had given her following the wormer. She ultimately declined to eat the treat (totally unheard of)! Thanks but no thanks.
She then politely modeled a slip lead and allowed her friend the vet to demonstrate how to adjust it's 'stop' for the next client before waiting somewhat anxiously with her lead being held by a complete stranger while the vet carried a bag of dog food out to mum's car.
Just a perfect star (for once).
I have been putting serious work into socialising her with people/strangers as according to the Internet one of the breed traits can be being a bit over possessive and territorial.
Until now the only dogs she has been able to meet have been have been her Mum and Dad and the collies who attend their goats.
She views this pack with a degree of trepidation as they always rush to greet Lass with noisy enthusiasm.
So here are some photos I took yesterday evening. Querida adores Lass and for better or worse copies much of her behaviour including the obsession for carrying sticks and hunting Lizards.
I think with her brindle coat and increasing size she also has a strong resemblance to a tiger!

RIP Charlie, big goodbye said yesterday. We had a chain of cuddles going on. Daughter cuddling Charlie, her husband cuddling her, me cuddling the baby and Grandad outside with the toddler. Tears all round.
He was 15 and had been nursed through many illnesses after a lucky start when daughter found him by the roadside in India as a puppy but with an injury to his back so he couldn’t at first walk.

Very sorry to hear your news Annie. It's a time we all dread and it must have been a very sad day for you all.

He was a lucky dog though... he had 15 years of life that he wouldn't otherwise have had if your paths hadn't crossed. Take care....

Tui, Dolly and Sophie (cat)

We still have Tui in spite of no more Chemo, we don't know for how long, but she is still wanting to play a lot, although she gets tired very quickly. She puts up with all the things we do to her including chicken smoothies delivered with a syringe when she won't eat. The picture is a few years old, but she still looks the same.

Tui is 9 now but still looks exactly the same.
