The cost of having our van Stolen

I had a MAN TGE stolen from a compound using a duplicate key. It was recorded on CCTV and I informed the police of whom I thought was the thief.
The police would not go and interview the suspect as they could not be clearly identified from the CCTV recording. Unbelievable.
What happened to just making enquiries sir! £35K down the tubes.
I saw something similar on youtube where the police saw the video of the scumbags face but they told the victim that unless he had his name tattoed on his forehead they wouldnt go and get him.

Over the years there have been occasions when i could have made a insurance claim for one reason or other re vehicles.
I've chosen not to many times knowing if i did it would cost me dearly in the future. Many £100s i've spent putting right what was wrong knowing i would save long term.
Insurance, biggest legal thieves on the planet.

Unfortunately I think the longer you go without a claim, percentage wise your more likely to have one. Almost everyone has a claim eventually for something.
I’m not sure I’ve really explained that properly! Insurance is a dark art to me
I'm pretty sure that if that was the case they wouldn't set the premiums the way they do. Whatever anyone thinks of the way premiums are set they seem to be pretty stable buisnesses and must be good at assessing risks

Thats the issue higher premium verses possible fraud
And if done for insurance fraud I suspect that its going to be impossible to get cover or only at an absolutely horrendous cost.

I gave it a like because I have likewise sometimes paid myself. However I think it's another case of it looks like easy money but isn't necessarily so. One of the highest quotes I heard was my mil to drive a small Suzuki £5k a year. Sounds like easy money but she was 95 and had written two cars off in three years! I wouldn't have taken the risk covering her for twice as much!!

100%. Many years ago, had a National Trust tree fall and write off 2 vehicles and an expensive fenceline. Their insurance wouldn't entertain a claim (there is case law giving them far more far more protection than you'd think essentially requiring them to be proved to be negligent in order to make a claim. That would of course come at a high cost to prove without guarantee of success. Long story short, result is we had to make a claim on our policies for total loss impacting on all vehicle and house insurances for years. Hence my new position.

Following the theft of our motorhome, (Bill Bailey), I’ve discovered just how badly a single claim can affect your ability to obtain insurance—even though Bill was recovered within days and the damage amounted to only around £1,280, with a £350 excess to pay ourselves.

More than 60 insurers have refused even to quote. So far, only two have provided online quotes, and both are still subject to confirmation over the phone.

Caravan Guard initially quoted a renewal of £1,260, although they have since reduced this to £995. Even so, that is an enormous price to pay following one theft—particularly after we’ve spent thousands of pounds upgrading Bill’s security with a tracker and Ghost immobiliser.

Bill was recovered without the help of a tracker. Nevertheless, after what happened, we made a substantial investment in additional security to reduce the chances of another theft. Rather than recognising that effort, the insurance industry now seems to regard us as virtually uninsurable.

This is the fallout from having our motorhome stolen, recovering it within days, making a relatively modest claim and then doing everything possible to protect it in the future. I feel utterly sickened by the way we’ve been treated and by what increasingly feels like blatant profiteering from people who have already been victims of crime.

If anyone is wondering whether a tracker or Ghost immobiliser is worth the investment, my answer is still an emphatic yes. Our experience has shown just how devastating a theft can be—and how little support you may receive from the insurance industry afterwards.
Ours wasn't actually taken off the drive, but broken into and the ignition barrel taken out and other small bits of damage - similar claim amount to yours. Caravan Guard or rather their underwriters declined to offer a quote on renewal unless we put the van in storage.
Ripe were the only insurers with anything like a sensible quote, but after a year with them I was able to shop around a bit more this year.
There was a spate of thefts and attempted thefts when ours was done, I think the postcode area got a bit of a black mark and that really didn't help.

(As an aside, we will always go away now when a certain 'fair' comes to town - especially the one that happens about a month before Appleby...)

Ghost is advertised as making it impossible to start the engine. Did they tow it?

I’m with you, we had two vehicles stollen following a burglary.

The MoHo insurance went from £450 to over £3K Adrian Flux brought the first year down to around £1200 and the replacement vehicles insurance was through the roof as well. So if it’s a no fault claim which it was if the insurance company cannot recover thier costs they hike the premiums for the next 5 years which is absolutely scandalous. They act as outlaws and cowboys and a law unto themselves, I feel your pain !

Daughters car a few weeks back she was indicating to turn right and as she went a scrote came screaming up on the wrong side of the road and did this😳😳luckily she was ok but went to hospital as she was 8 months pregnant 😁😁
2 blokes on the stolen scooter one ran off with a broken ankle and the other had large cut on his leg and was bleeding out on the pavement. Unfortunately it seems they both survived but obviously nothing done about it so car written off on insurance claim. Luckily she has got herself a new car and the insurance has not gone up.
