Not so new at motorhoming now, but still learning!
Despite putting back our departure a couple of days due to work stuff, we still haven't decided on a route through France. Thought we would ask everyone which are their favourite French Aires and see how many we can stay at.

Would love to stay at the most scenic ones and a smooth pleasant drive down.

So what's your suggestions? :)

REVIEW:

1) Lovely spot with fine 180 degree views over the Seine & the Pont de Brotonne, absolutely tranquil but a bit remote with no facilities nearby. Picnic area here & cars appear to also use the spaces but it empties out in the evening. Clean borne in good working order. Ideal for a quiet night, footpaths along the river in either direction for a pleasant walk. St Nic is 5 mins drive away & has a small café/ restaurant that sells the jetons for the borne.

2) "An aire next to the Seine where 12 camping-cars can stay free on spaces separated by hedges." RECOMMENDED CAMPING-CAR MAGAZINE

A very quiet location with little shade & about 1km from the centre of this rural town, next to a forest with several walks/ cycle trails. Chateau within 500m. Large gravel parking area, easy to manoeuvre but access is via a narrow chicane bordered by rocks which may present problems to large vehicles.

ORADOUR SUR GLANE (5*)
ADDRESS: RUE DU STADE, OFF D9

TEL: 05 55 03 10 01 FAX:

TYPE OF AIRE: MUNICIPAL
FACILITIES: WATER /GREY DRAIN/ BLACK DRAIN / ELECTRIC / TOILETS / RUBBISH

LOCATION: SEMI-RURAL NO. OF SPACES: 20

PRICES/ RATES: CASH

PARKING: FREE SERVICES: 2€ WATER OR ELECTRIC

OPENING TIMES: ALL YEAR

GPS COORDS: N45.93565 E01.02479

DIRECTIONS: From LIMOGES take N141 WEST & D9 to ORADOUR SUR GLANE. Proceed thru village on D9 (RUE DE LA LANDE) & just before leaving turn LEFT into AVE DU STADE. Then at end of road - turn RIGHT into RUE DU STADE & AIRE.

SITE DESCRIPTION: The Aire at this historic WWII village & visitor centre is situated at the northern edge of the "new" village (500m from the centre) & about 1km from the ruins of the old village. The aire is a fairly modern purpose built construction (2004) with 10 very large sloping concrete spaces (each taking 2 motorhomes) accessed off a circular tarmac road (reserved for motorhomes), there is no shade but there are toilets, picnic tables, a play area & rubbish bins. The borne is a Raclet with a badly positioned drainage grid.

In June, 1944, just after the D-Day landings, an SS division (that had been attacked by the French Resistance) entered this small village to make an example of the occupants. The 642 villagers were rounded up, massacred & the village destroyed. The village has been kept in the same state as it was on that day as a reminder of the horrors of war. The ruined village can be visited together with a Centre de la Memoire.

REVIEW

1) A well arranged & well maintained aire but not the best of designs -- the spaces are quite sloping (ramps required) & the grey drainage at the borne is hopeless, otherwise the location is quite quiet but not very convenient for the ruins or the Centre de la Memoire. There are WC's & washbasins on the aire (no showers), as well as a barbeque & play area. The aire is signposted in the village.

2) A good facility in a nice open location overlooking a wooded area, but we found that quite a few of the spaces had been taken by cars when we visited in August. A fascinating & quite moving place to visit.

3) A good aire but it was full when we visited so we stayed in one of the car parks at the southern side of the new village -- a lot more convenient for visiting the martyr village but no facilities here. Quite quiet at night & an easy walk to the shops & restaurants. Car parks get very full as the day progresses so best to arrive early or late after the cars have gone.

4) "An impeccable aire in a pleasant wooded environment". CAMPING-CAR MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED

REVIEW

1) A top of the range Aire (busy in summer) in a lovely spot - we're parked here under a tree watching the boats sail by, can't be bad. Quiet at night, long lead required for some pitches, basic borne (located behind the Harbourmasters office) but no rubbish bins. Epicerie next to Aire. SITE DESCRIPTION: Surrounded by a pine forest & close to a large lake (100m) where boating & swimming are possible, this Aire is sited alongside Ave de Losa with parking on grass & some shade from the mature trees. Shops & town centre are about 1km away. The artisanal service point is quite old & really could do with replacing (& only has one tap).

REVIEW

2007 Nice location but we thought this Aire was quite old & dirty. Has 15 spaces for motorhomes and a perfectly functional borne. The ground was covered with bark chippings, which wasn't a great idea as they quickly end up inside the van. Ground gets quite muddy in wet weather.

2007 Aire was quite pleasant, clean & practical but probably awkward for long vehicles. No parking is allowed outside the aire -- the municipal police keep a close watch on it.

GPS COORDS: N44.48556 W01.08450

DIRECTIONS: From BORDEAUX take A63 /A660 SOUTH & exit @ Jcn 1 onto D216 to SANGUINET. Turn RIGHT @ PLACE DE LA MAIRIE into AVE DE LOSA & follow road for 1km around lake to AIRE.

Now this really is a brilliant post, as an aside, there are very useful post like this on several different threads, can they not be collated and be made into a resource on the forum? Over to you Jim!

On our journeys down to Spain we have stayed several times on the free aire at Laruns in the Pyrenees, just south of Pau. It is absolutely beautiful and the journey on across the mountains is stunning. Try to have breakfast at the summit on the border between France and Spain. Majic(y)

Chusclan Vineyard and Cave near Bagnols sur Ceze just off the A7 motorway. Brilliant! Huge proper pitches, free water, waste drop and the chance to taste local wine. We were there for 2 nights two weeks ago and bought wine from the petrol pump type taps - still enjoying it. Incidentally be careful if you use your sat nav to find it from the co-ordinates in the all the Aires book. Ours took us down single track paths in the vineyards late at night. Very scary. No need to go that way we discovered in daylight. LOL

I may be wrong but Fidget seems to have 'borrowed' information from the Motorhoming France web site. We paid £12 for a one year membership and it is definitely worth the investment as for that subscription they give detailed information on 1,550 aires and 195 campsites as well as masses of other information re motorhoming in France. Here's the link: -

Hi Rob & Val, Yes correct Motorhoming France web site. Paid my £12 and try to help others with the advice. Alan who runs that site is most helpful and I think it's a great site so useful.
By the way I like you avatar , the compass calypso we had one for 7 years loved it.
