Getting better
My Comfort insurance renewal has come in with a request/demand that I fit a Thatcham5/6 tracker

Not a problem in itself but the monitoring costs seem high on the ones I’ve looked at.

Any suggestions

And yes it’s a Ford based vehicle kept in a very secure gold standard site.

In 1983 I drove from England to Lomé
Mine was from TravelStar. It's not cheap, even with the discount for three year's cover.

Have you tried others that may not demand tracker?

I enquired about not having my tracker,. Comfort said about a 5% rise in premium. Only available for vans under 75k.
Then I can fit a tracker that isnt thatcham rated, yes I still want one.

If you check with insurers, they should give you a list of their approved Tracker companies.
After initial payment, I pay around £140 a year. Admittedly for very little other than a few phone calls to tell me the van had moved, when it had not.
As one of many whose van had been stolen in the past and lived through the trauma of lost precious items, it is not too expensive for me.

I had the same.Been with Comfort for years.Always found them very good to deal with. This years renewals came with a request that I had a Thatcham Tracker fitted,I rang up and said I wasn't happy as I already have a Thatcham alarm. They found me another insurance company who didn't require a Tracker. So went with that!

I have not had a renewal yet due next year but I would refuse point blank to have anything Thatcham simply because the thieving industry can crack them too easily (they're just an insurance con IN MY Opinion) So I will state that when my renewal comes and I WILL be doing a search anyway

That's okay if you have that option, there were no insurers willing to insure the Morelo without a Cat5 tracker. I opted for Smartrack. Cost me around 900GBP to install and 199GBP per year but opted for the 499GBP deal where I have subscription for the life of owning the van. That did not work out cheaper given I have bought a new one after 2 years :-(

Not many Cat 5 trackers to choose from:

As all Cat Five and Cat Six systems are being phased out and replaced with VTS in January I would suggest you opt for the newer specifcation so close to the changeover

Cheaper than Cat Five as well

This is simply untrue

Millions of pounds worth of vehicles are recovered by tracking systems every year

No one to my knowledge has had a Motorhome stolen with my Growler system fitted

Thanks for that.
Sounds rather like the Non Starter system that goes with our Growler except that needs a text to switch on/off rather than a fob.
In comparison and looking at the costs of that Meta system I have concluded that VTS stands for Veryexpensive Tracking System.

Richard.

Can't remember ;)
Vehicle Tracking System (VTS)

Or as we call it VanBitz Tracking System

Our VTS starts at £199 installed

Just been doing a search as we need to get a tracker for insurance purposes.....Is your VTS that price without one of your alarms? Cheers, Terry

Not at all Eddie.
Your product would be preferable as it prevents theft before it happens rather than tracking it after the fact.

It seems by insisting on a tracker they are doing everything they can to remove the risk, and a payout, yet still charge the customer for a theft insurance.
If they are confident trackers are so effective they should be confident enough to discount the theft element by say 80% if a recognised tracker is fitted.
I would think theft of motorhomes is pretty high on their risk list.

LOL I was joking as the thread was from last year.

As it happens I agree with you, I find it ironic that we pay an insurer to provide cover in the event of theft, and then the insurer insists that we pay to have a gadget fitted so that we can pay another company to monitor it so if it is nicked the insurer doesn't have to pay out! Which is what they are being paid for! However, it isn't an ideal world

Regarding not getting it back, I have written loads of times, yes you would, if, it was returned quickly, before anyone has had time to mess it all up or steal anything

What you wouldn't want is it back weeks after it has been stolen, used, abused, vandalised, stripped, raced and ragged!

if it is saving the insurers millions it is also reducing our premiums. My premium is less than £300 for a motorhome that would cost over £90k to replace, a pretty good deal I think.

Plus the £150+ PER YEAR you will be paying to the tracker monitoring company and the initial cost of the tracker and installation.
Your premium would need to be reduced by 50% before it became a good deal.
The saving your insurers may be passing on due to not having as many theft claims may be 2 or 3% of your normal premium.
Insurers are out to make money for their shareholders, not make friends.

There is a company out there that cannot get Thatcham approval that keeps telling people Thatcham is being phased out lol.
It would be like me telling customers they need a new Bailey or Sunliving as all the other brands don't exist anymore.
What also makes me laugh with selling new vans especially those over £50,000 is when we get a customer that says we don't need a tracker, who then sheepishly rings me back and says their insurance company won't insure them unless it has a Tracker fitted. Do we know anyone etc. I then explain that Vanbitz are about 3 miles away from me, give them a call.
Yet to have an issue with any Vanbitz system that has been fitted to one of my customers vans. I would also point out that I have normally 20 odd used vehicles on my forecourt and the plethora of alarms that will randomly decide to go off all day throughout the day drives me mad. The modified car alarms are easy (Most alarms are apparantly) we can plus into the system and turn them off - Thank god!
