I'm a newbie
I appeal once again to the great wisdom of the crowd...thanks in advance. It's like this..SWMBO has asked what arrangements I have made (DOH!) for her to dry her hair during an upcoming spell of wild camping i.e. 12v only. Just so you know I have given all the stock answers like - head out the window whilst moving, balaclavas etc but I am sensing these are not quite hitting the mark. Now I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to all things electrickery so this lamps x bolts = what? doesn't mean much too me but...if I can find a low (ish) power hairdryer is it feasible to run a small inverter off my 12v system without frying the batteries but satisfying SWMBO? We have 2 x 95aH leisure batteries which are (currently) in rude health. Would like to keep em that way! What would a useable inverter cost? How long can I run it safely before recharging hab batteries? Go easy on me...and once again thanks for all your extensive knowledge.

I did a thread in the general mechanicals section about fitting a 1500W inverter so Mrs DBK could dry her hair. :) She uses a 1200W hairdryer but finds she doesn't need to use it on full power and dries her (short) hair in a few minutes. 190W of solar replenishes the batteries in an hour os so given our experience to dates.
If you have to pay someone to fit it, which I strongly recommend unless you are very sure you can do it yourself (lethal voltages and fire risk) then it is going to cost a few hundred pounds. :( I did it myself but didn't get it right first time as the thread will reveal. :)

Lots of 12-volt hairdryers priced from a tenner, which could be used directly off the leisure batteries. Or the cab battery when driving.

Doubt they are much good, but you could win some brownie points for a modest investment to 'show willing'! :D

And save a bundle on an expensive inverter... ;)

The Babyliss 700w 'big hair' styler is only 370w on it's lower setting and is still quite adequate. Thats just 31 amps from the battery.

Many thanks to all those responding. I just need to "rework" the balaclava idea I think!

In our experience, forget the 12v hairdryers as a practical proposition. Generally they are around 120 - 150 watts in power and pretty ineffectual. You seem to need around 350 watts and upwards from experience.

By the way, there is a new link for that cordless hairdryer, a whopping £145 though. Still cheaper than a genie

Ooops. :Eeek::Eeek: Um, where do you find a genie when you want one?
Back to the short hair suggestion I think or how about the exhaled air from an airbed pump.

My wife uses a 12 volt hairdryer and it does a decent job. I bought it about 30 years ago, so I don't think that model will be available any more. It's not as powerful as this one though:

I admit I brought a kippor for hairdryer insurance, haha

Same here, our 1kw generator is there for emergencies but really the only time it gets used is for Lyns hair dryer. Hair dryer on its lowest setting (800w I think) works a treat.

I swim most mornings and my hair is always wet, I tend just to let it dry in its own good time.

That's the method I use (y).

(Except I've got long hair!)
I did have, bum-length, but not really enough room to wash it in the moho so I went for the Sinead "Skinhead" O'Connor look... (well maybe not quite, but pretty close...)
